Chapter 12: The Secret Beneath Blackwood Cemetery

The freight platform burst through the surface with a deafening clang.

Cold night air rushed into Adrian's lungs.

For the first time in hours, he could see the sky.

Dark clouds drifted over the Blackwood Estate.

Blue and red police lights flashed beyond the iron gates.

Sirens echoed across the hills.

But Adrian barely noticed.

His eyes were fixed on the family cemetery.

Floodlights illuminated the old stone mausoleum.

Excavators surrounded it like predators.

Workers in tactical gear were drilling into the granite foundation.

Lady Beatrice had arrived first.

She stood beside the entrance, calm as ever, holding a silver cane she had never needed before.

Gideon Mercer barked orders into a radio.

"Faster."

"The outer wall is almost open."

Charles stepped off the platform beside Adrian.

His face tightened.

"They're digging in the wrong place."

Adrian looked at him.

"What do you mean?"

"The vault isn't beneath the mausoleum."

Charles pointed toward a weathered marble statue of an angel standing twenty yards away.

"It's beneath her."

Vivienne frowned.

"Then why build the mausoleum?"

Charles answered quietly.

"So everyone would look in the wrong direction."

At that moment, Lady Beatrice noticed them.

Her expression did not change.

"I wondered how long it would take."

She slowly applauded.

"Charles..."

"You finally brought our son home."

Charles stared at her.

"You've already destroyed enough."

She smiled faintly.

"Not yet."

She raised one hand.

More armed men emerged from behind the cemetery walls.

They spread into a semicircle, cutting off every escape.

Adrian counted quickly.

At least twelve.

Far too many.

Celeste whispered beside him,

"We can't fight all of them."

Adrian's eyes never left the angel statue.

"We don't have to."

He turned to Charles.

"Tell me how to open it."

Charles hesitated.

"If I tell you now..."

"...everything changes."

"It already has."

Charles took a long breath.

"When my father built Blackwood Industries, he discovered that several politicians, judges, and business partners planned to seize the company."

"So he collected evidence against all of them."

"He sealed everything beneath the estate."

Vivienne asked,

"Why didn't he give it to the police?"

Charles gave a bitter smile.

"Because half the police leadership at the time was already on their payroll."

Adrian looked back at Lady Beatrice.

"So you wanted the evidence destroyed."

"No."

Lady Beatrice answered loudly enough for everyone to hear.

"I wanted control of it."

"There is a difference."

Charles shook his head.

"No."

"There isn't."

The drilling suddenly stopped.

One of Gideon's men ran toward him.

"We've broken through."

Gideon smiled.

Lady Beatrice walked toward the opening.

Then the man's face changed.

"There... there's nothing inside."

Lady Beatrice froze.

"What?"

"It's empty."

She climbed down into the excavation herself.

Only cracked stone.

Packed earth.

Nothing more.

Charles laughed.

A genuine laugh.

"You spent eight years searching the wrong grave."

Lady Beatrice climbed back out slowly.

For the first time in Adrian's life...

She looked uncertain.

Charles pointed toward the angel statue.

"You forgot one thing."

"My father never trusted appearances."

Lady Beatrice followed his gaze.

Her eyes widened.

"So that's where..."

Adrian ran.

Gideon reacted instantly.

"Stop him!"

Gunfire shattered the silence.

Bullets chipped marble around the cemetery.

Adrian dove behind a stone monument.

Vivienne and Celeste returned fire using the guards' confiscated pistols.

Charles sprinted toward the angel statue despite his injuries.

A bullet grazed his side.

He stumbled but kept moving.

"Father!"

Adrian shouted.

"I'm fine!"

Charles reached the statue first.

He brushed dirt from its base.

There, almost invisible beneath decades of moss, was a tiny bronze crest.

The original Blackwood family seal.

Charles pressed his thumb into the center.

Nothing happened.

He looked toward Adrian.

"It won't open for me anymore."

"Why?"

"Because ownership passed to the next generation."

Adrian understood.

"The biometric lock..."

"...needs my hand."

Charles nodded.

"Hurry."

Adrian sprinted across the open ground.

Bullets struck the grass behind him.

One shattered the angel's wing.

Stone fragments exploded across the cemetery.

Adrian reached the pedestal.

Charles guided his hand to the bronze seal.

"Flat."

Adrian pressed his palm against it.

For several seconds...

Nothing.

Then a soft mechanical click echoed beneath the earth.

The entire statue rotated thirty degrees.

Ancient gears groaned.

The ground trembled.

A circular stone platform slowly descended, revealing a staircase hidden beneath the angel.

Everyone stopped.

Even Gideon's men stared in disbelief.

Lady Beatrice whispered,

"So it was true..."

Cold air drifted upward from the darkness below.

Electric lights flickered on automatically.

The vault had never lost power.

Charles looked at Adrian.

"Your grandfather planned for this day."

Lady Beatrice recovered first.

"Kill them."

Her order shattered the silence.

The mercenaries advanced.

Before they could fire, police vehicles burst through the cemetery gates.

Spotlights swept across the graves.

"Federal agents!"

A commanding voice echoed through loudspeakers.

"Drop your weapons!"

Half the mercenaries hesitated.

The other half opened fire.

Chaos erupted.

Adrian looked toward Charles.

"We're going down."

Charles nodded.

"If the evidence survives..."

"...everything ends tonight."

Vivienne and Celeste followed close behind as the four disappeared into the hidden staircase.

The heavy stone entrance began closing automatically above them.

Gideon saw it.

"No!"

He broke away from the firefight and lunged toward the opening.

Lady Beatrice followed only a step behind.

Just before the stone sealed completely...

Both of them slipped inside.

The vault door slammed shut.

Outside, the gunfire continued.

Inside, absolute silence fell.

A long corridor stretched before them.

Its walls were lined with polished black granite.

At the far end stood an enormous steel door bearing the original Blackwood crest.

Above it, carved into the stone in faded gold letters, were words Adrian had never seen before:

"The greatest fortune is not wealth... but the truth buried with it."

Then, somewhere beyond the steel door, a child's voice echoed through the darkness.

"Daddy..."

Adrian's blood ran cold.

It was Oliver.

But Rose had taken him to the hospital.

He looked at Charles.

Charles's face had gone completely pale.

May you like

He whispered only four words.

"That isn't Oliver's voice."
