CHAPTER 1 — The Device Beneath the Scar

The restaurant remained frozen.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Because in the center of the room stood a little girl who had not taken a single step in two years.

My daughter.

Sophie.

Her legs trembled beneath her.

I rushed forward and caught her before she fell.

“Dad…” she whispered.

Her voice was filled with fear and confusion.

“I can feel them.”

Those four words broke something inside me.

For two years, I had watched my daughter wake up every morning unable to feel the world beneath her waist.

I had watched her stare at children running outside.

I had watched her pretend she was okay when she wasn't.

And now...

She was standing.

But instead of celebrating, the homeless man looked terrified.

He grabbed the scanner from the table and stared at the numbers flashing across the screen.

“It's worse than I thought.”

My heart dropped.

“What do you mean?”

He looked at Sophie.

“The device has been active longer than expected.”

Everyone stared at him.

The man slowly opened Sophie’s medical file.

Inside were documents from her surgery.

But something was wrong.

The papers had been altered.

The dates.

The signatures.

Even the surgeon's approval.

All fake.

“This wasn't a medical procedure,” he said.

“This was an experiment.”

A woman gasped.

Camille immediately stepped forward.

“You're insane.”

But her voice was shaking.

The homeless man looked at her.

“No, Camille.”

“I know exactly who you are.”

The entire room went silent.

My sister-in-law froze.

“How do you know my name?”

The man reached into his old jacket and pulled out a photograph.

A picture of Camille entering a private laboratory three days after Sophie’s surgery.

My hands started trembling.

Because Camille had told me she was helping us.

She had said she found the best doctors.

She had promised Sophie would recover.

But she was the one who sent us there.

Then the restaurant doors opened.

And my mother walked inside.

The woman I had buried seven years ago.

The woman everyone said died in a car accident.

She looked at Sophie with tears in her eyes.

“My little angel…”

Sophie covered her mouth.

“Grandma?”

My mother collapsed.

“I’m sorry, sweetheart.”

“I tried to stop them.”

May you like

And then she looked at Camille.

“You destroyed my family.”
