CHAPTER 2: The Day Vanessa Lost Everything

Three days later, Vanessa walked into the house expecting another argument.

She didn’t expect a courtroom waiting for her.

She walked through the front door wearing a designer coat and carrying a confident smile.

“Daniel, we need to talk.”

I didn’t answer.

Instead, I placed a folder on the table.

Her smile disappeared.

“What is this?”

“Evidence.”

She laughed nervously.

“Evidence of what?”

I opened my laptop.

The first video played.

Vanessa insulting my mother.

Then another.

Vanessa locking my mother’s bedroom door.

Then another.

Marcus entering the house.

Her face changed.

The confidence disappeared.

“You recorded me?”

“No.”

I looked directly at her.

“You recorded yourself.”

She became angry.

“You set me up!”

I shook my head.

“No, Vanessa.”

“You revealed yourself.”

Within hours, investigators arrived.

The medical reports.

The security footage.

The hidden recordings.

Everything was undeniable.

Marcus tried to leave the country.

He was stopped at the airport.

Vanessa’s lawyer tried to claim my mother was confused.

Then the prosecutor played the audio recording.

My mother’s voice.

Her fear.

Her pain.

The courtroom became silent.

Vanessa looked around.

For the first time, she realized nobody believed her anymore.

The woman who had spent months pretending to be a victim was finally exposed.

After the hearing, I visited my mother.

She looked smaller than before.

But she smiled when she saw me.

“I’m sorry,” I whispered.

She shook her head.

“You came home.”

“That’s what matters.”

I held her hand.

Then she looked toward the doorway.

Elena was standing there.

“Take care of that girl,” my mother said softly.

“She has a good heart.”

I smiled.

“I know.”

But Elena didn’t want anything.

She refused money.

She refused rewards.

“I only did what anyone should have done,” she said.

I looked at her.

“No.”

“You did what most people wouldn’t.”

And for the first time in eight months...

I felt like my home was finally peaceful.

May you like

But there was still one thing I needed to do.

Say goodbye to the life I thought I had.
