CHAPTER 2 — The Secret Emma Took to Her Grave
Thirty minutes later, Daniel, Lily, and Emma sat inside a small apartment above the café.
The room was simple.
Too simple.
A small bed.
A worn sofa.
A few books.
No photographs.
No memories.
Nothing that showed Emma had ever existed.
Daniel noticed.
"You erased yourself."
Emma looked away.
"I had to."
"Why?"
Silence.
Then Emma walked to a drawer and pulled out an old envelope.
She placed it on the table.
Inside was a newspaper clipping.
Daniel picked it up.
His hands immediately began shaking.
The headline read:
"Woman Dies After Witnessing Corporate Fraud Investigation."
Daniel looked at Emma.
"What is this?"
Emma took a deep breath.
"The night of the accident wasn't an accident."
Daniel's eyes narrowed.
"What are you saying?"
Emma sat down.
"Your company wasn't as clean as you thought."
Daniel froze.
Seven years ago, he had worked for a large financial corporation.
A few days before Emma's death, she had discovered illegal activities involving some executives.
She planned to expose them.
But someone found out.
"The car crash..." Daniel whispered.
Emma nodded.
"They wanted me gone."
Daniel felt sick.
"But the hospital said you died."
"I was injured badly. The doctors believed I wouldn't survive."
She looked at Lily.
"When they realized I was still alive, they moved me."
"Moved you?"
Emma's eyes filled with pain.
"They told me if I went back to you, they would kill Daniel and Lily."
Daniel stopped breathing.
His daughter.
His little girl.
The reason Emma disappeared.
"You left us to protect us?"
Emma nodded.
"Every day for seven years, I watched from far away."
Daniel's anger slowly disappeared.
Replaced by something heavier.
Pain.
"You saw Lily grow up?"
Emma wiped away a tear.
"Her first day of school."
"Her birthday parties."
"When she lost her first tooth."
Daniel looked away.
"Then why didn't you come back?"
Emma's voice broke.
"Because every time I wanted to, I remembered the threat."
A long silence filled the room.
Then Lily slowly walked toward Emma.
The little girl who had spent her entire life believing her mother was gone.
She reached out.
And touched Emma's hand.
"Mommy..."
Emma collapsed into tears.
For seven years, she had survived by pretending she wasn't a mother.
But one word from Lily destroyed that wall.
Daniel watched them hug.
And for the first time in years...
His family felt complete again.
But then Daniel's phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
A man's voice spoke calmly.
"You found her."
Daniel froze.

"That was a mistake."
