CHAPTER 1 — The Woman Behind the Counter

The rain continued to fall outside the café, tapping softly against the glass windows.

But inside, Daniel could no longer hear it.

He could only hear one thing.

His daughter's voice.

"That's Mommy."

The words repeated inside his head like an impossible echo.

Daniel stood frozen beside the table, staring at the woman behind the counter.

The woman who was supposed to be gone.

The woman whose funeral he had attended seven years ago.

The woman whose empty grave he had visited every year on Lily's birthday.

His wife.

Emma.

The waitress slowly lowered the coffee cup in her hand.

Her face had lost all color.

For several seconds, neither of them moved.

Neither of them spoke.

Then Emma whispered the one word that destroyed everything Daniel believed.

"Daniel..."

His heart stopped.

Nobody had called him that way in years.

Not with that voice.

Not with that warmth.

Not with the same quiet sadness that used to fill their home.

Lily looked between them, confused.

"Daddy... why is Mommy working here?"

Daniel swallowed hard.

He wanted to answer.

He wanted to tell his daughter that she was mistaken.

That this was impossible.

That dead people didn't come back.

But when Emma stepped closer, he saw something that made his entire body go cold.

A small scar near her eyebrow.

The same scar she got when she fell off her bicycle the summer they met.

The same eyes that watched him walk into every room.

The same smile that once made him believe he had everything.

"Emma..." Daniel whispered.

The woman's eyes filled with tears.

"I'm sorry."

Those two words hurt more than anything else.

Daniel stepped back.

"Sorry?"

His voice cracked.

"You were dead."

The café became silent.

A few customers looked over, but nobody dared interrupt.

Emma looked down.

"I know."

Daniel's anger started fighting with his disbelief.

"No. You don't understand."

His hands trembled.

"I held your hand in the hospital."

"I watched your heart monitor stop."

"I buried you."

Emma closed her eyes.

"I know."

"Then explain."

Her lips trembled.

But before she could answer, Lily suddenly grabbed Daniel's hand.

"Daddy..."

Her small voice softened the entire room.

"Don't be mad at Mommy."

Daniel looked down at his daughter.

"Why would you say that?"

Lily stared at Emma.

"Because she looks scared."

That sentence broke something inside him.

Because Lily was right.

Emma wasn't acting like someone hiding a secret.

She looked like someone who had been running from pain for years.

Daniel slowly sat down.

"Tell me everything."

Emma looked toward the back door of the café.

Then she whispered:

"Not here."

"Someone might still be watching."

Daniel froze.

"Watching?"

Emma nodded.

And for the first time, Daniel realized something.

Maybe the woman in front of him wasn't a ghost from the past.

May you like

Maybe she was a woman who had been hiding from someone.

Someone dangerous.
