Chapter 2: The Woman Who Wanted His Heart Alone

The wedding was canceled.
The guests left confused.
The rumors started immediately.
But Daniel didn't care.
All he cared about was Ellie.
That night, he sat beside her bed as she held her stuffed rabbit.
“Daddy?”
“Yes, sweetheart?”
“Are you mad at me?”
Daniel froze.
Those five words hurt more than anything Vanessa had done.
“No.”
He brushed her hair away.
“Why would you think that?”
“Because weddings are supposed to be happy.”
Ellie looked down.
“And I ruined yours.”
Daniel felt tears forming.
“No, Ellie.”
He held her hand.
“Someone else tried to make you feel small. That was never your fault.”
For the first time all day, Ellie smiled.
But Daniel knew the story wasn't over.
The next morning, he went through everything.
Messages.
Emails.
Security footage.
He discovered something disturbing.
Vanessa had been slowly trying to separate him from Ellie for months.
She had canceled father-daughter trips.
She had complained whenever Daniel spent time with Ellie.
She had even told friends:
“Once we are married, Daniel will finally understand that children need boundaries.”
But the worst discovery came from the wedding house security camera.
Daniel watched the footage silently.
Vanessa entering Ellie's room.
Vanessa kneeling beside her.
Vanessa closing the bedroom door.
Then Vanessa leading Ellie toward the staircase.
Daniel's hands shook.
But then something unexpected appeared.
A second person.
Vanessa’s sister, Claire.
She had been there.
And she had recorded everything.
When Daniel confronted Claire, she broke down.
“I was scared.”
“Scared of what?”
“Vanessa.”
Claire admitted that Vanessa had always been obsessed with controlling Daniel’s life.
“She didn’t want a husband with a daughter.”
“She wanted a husband who belonged only to her.”
Daniel looked at the recording again.
His heart broke for Ellie.
But it also broke because he realized something.
He almost allowed someone into their lives who saw his daughter as competition.
Later that evening, Vanessa arrived at Daniel’s house.
She didn't apologize.
She didn't cry.
Instead, she blamed him.
“You’re choosing an eight-year-old’s feelings over our future?”
Daniel stared at her.
“She’s my daughter.”
“And I was supposed to become your wife.”
“Yes.”
He paused.
“But a wife should never ask a father to make his child feel unwanted.”
Vanessa’s expression changed.
“You’ll regret losing me.”
Daniel opened the door.
“No.”
He looked at her.
“I almost regretted losing her.”
Vanessa left.
And Daniel thought that was the end.
But one week later, he received a package.
Inside was a letter.
And a photograph.
The photograph showed Vanessa meeting with someone months before the wedding.
Someone Daniel knew.
Someone who had helped Vanessa create her plan.
His former business partner.
