Chapter 2: The Truth Buried for Thirty Years

The old woman invited Clara and her family to a small apartment hidden above an old bakery near the piazza.

Nobody spoke during the walk.

The three girls held Elena's hands the entire way.

People watching from the streets couldn't understand.

An old homeless woman who everyone ignored...

Walking with a wealthy young family who treated her like she belonged.

Inside Elena's apartment, everything was old.

But everything was carefully preserved.

There were hundreds of photographs.

Letters.

Small toys.

And memories that had survived decades.

Elena placed a wooden box on the table.

"I kept these because I believed one day..."

She stopped.

"I believed someone would come back."

She opened the box.

Inside were three small bracelets.

Each one had a name engraved.

Lily.

Emma.

Grace.

Clara covered her mouth.

"My daughters have those same birthmarks."

Elena looked up.

"What?"

Clara slowly rolled up the girls' sleeves.

On each child's wrist was a small identical mark.

The same mark shown in the old photographs.

Elena began shaking.

"No..."

She touched her chest.

"No, this can't be real."

The father looked confused.

"How could this happen?"

Elena took a deep breath.

"Thirty years ago, my daughter Sofia was pregnant with triplets."

She looked at the children.

"She died after giving birth."

Her voice became weaker.

"The hospital told me the babies were adopted because I was too poor to care for them."

Clara felt tears forming.

"Then how did they become my daughters?"

Elena looked toward the window.

"Because someone lied."

The room became cold.

"Someone stole my grandchildren."

The father immediately stood.

"Who?"

Elena looked at him.

"I don't know."

She reached into another drawer.

"But Sofia knew something was wrong."

She pulled out a letter.

A letter that had never been opened.

On the front were three words:

"For my daughters."

Clara's hands trembled.

"Why didn't you open it?"

Elena looked down.

"Because it was delivered the day after Sofia died."

A painful silence followed.

"I was too afraid."

Lily walked toward the table.

She touched the letter.

"Open it."

Everyone looked at her.

The little girl smiled sadly.

"Mommy said secrets hurt more when they stay hidden."

Elena stared at her.

Because those words...

Those exact words...

Were words Sofia used to say.

With trembling hands, Elena opened the letter.

Inside was one sentence:

"Mother, if you are reading this, they took my babies. Find them. They are not lost. They were stolen."

Clara's face turned pale.

The father immediately reached for his phone.

"We need to find out who did this."

But Elena stopped him.

Because beneath the letter was another piece of paper.

A name.

A name that changed everything.

Dr. Vincent Hale.

The doctor who had signed the adoption papers.

The doctor who had told Elena her grandchildren were gone forever.
