Chapter 13 - The Exposure

By noon, the rain had cleared, leaving the sky over the city a clean, brilliant blue.

The courthouse steps were packed with news cameras from every major national network. Evelyn Cross stood at the podium, flanked by the State Attorney General and Federal investigators.

"Today, federal authorities have unsealed a fourteen-count indictment against Orson Vance, Tabitha Vance, and County Judge Marcus Higgins," Evelyn announced to the flashing cameras. "The charges include attempted murder, corporate fraud, tampering with evidence, conspiracy, and systematic child endangerment."

Inside the district attorney's private briefing room, Nathan handed me a warm cup of coffee.

"Her lungs are completely clear, Austin," Nathan said, smiling warmly. "The steroid treatment did its job. Her peak flow readings are above normal. She's going to live a completely healthy, full life."

On the couch, Juniper was busy coloring a picture of a mountain cabin, surrounded by new crayons Willa had bought her from the corner store.

Willa walked in, carrying a certified court order signed directly by Justice Elena Morales.

"It's done, Austin," Willa said, tears of relief shining in her eyes. "Full, unconditional legal and physical custody is restored to you. The court has also stripped the entire board of Vance Industries. You are the sole executor of Sarah's estate until Juniper turns twenty-one."

"I don't care about the company," I said, looking at my daughter. "I just want her to breathe."

"You don't have to run it," Evelyn said, walking into the room. "We’re converting the company's assets into a non-profit foundation dedicated to providing free, unadulterated asthma medications to low-income children across the entire country."
