Chapter 2 — The Secret They Buried

Elena ran faster than she ever had before.

Her hospital gown dragged against the wet pavement.

Quincy held her hand tightly, trying not to fall behind.

“Mom… hurry.”

The hospital behind them disappeared into darkness.

Until they reached the back entrance.

The place nobody was supposed to see.

Behind the medical waste containers sat a small plastic carrier covered by a blue blanket.

Elena froze.

“No…”

Her heart stopped.

Slowly, she walked closer.

Her hands trembled as she lifted the blanket.

A tiny baby girl stared back at her.

Alive.

Breathing.

Crying softly.

Elena collapsed to her knees.

“Oh my God…”

She picked up her daughter.

Her daughter.

The child they told her was gone.

The child they tried to erase.

“I’m here,” Elena whispered through tears.

“I’m here, baby.”

Quincy cried beside her.

“I told you she was alive.”

Elena held both children close.

But then footsteps echoed behind them.

Marcus.

He stood near the doorway.

His face was pale.

For the first time, Elena saw real fear in him.

“What did you do?”

Her voice was quiet.

But more dangerous than screaming.

Marcus looked away.

“Elena…”

“No.”

She stood slowly.

“You knew.”

Marcus said nothing.

“You knew our daughter was alive.”

His silence was the answer.

Elena’s hands tightened around the baby.

“How could you?”

Marcus finally spoke.

“My mother said it was the only way.”

“The only way for what?”

His eyes filled with shame.

“She said the baby was dangerous.”

Elena stared at him.

“Dangerous?”

Marcus looked broken.

“She found out before the birth…”

A pause.

“She found out the hospital records had been changed.”

Elena frowned.

“What are you talking about?”

Marcus looked toward the hospital.

“My mother has been hiding something for years.”

The truth slowly began to appear.

Vivian wasn’t trying to protect the family.

She was protecting a secret.

A secret involving a previous child.

A secret involving stolen medical records.

And a baby that was never supposed to exist.

Minutes later, police arrived after a hospital security guard reported the missing newborn.

Vivian was waiting inside.

Calm.

Confident.

Until Quincy walked into the room.

“I saw you.”

Everyone turned.

Vivian’s expression changed.

“You don’t know what you saw.”

Quincy stepped forward.

“Yes, I do.”

His small hand held a security card.

“I took this from your coat.”

The officer looked at it.

Hospital restricted access card.

Vivian’s face went pale.

Because that card proved she had entered the newborn area.

At the exact time Elena’s daughter disappeared.

The truth was no longer buried.

But there was one final secret.

The police discovered an old file hidden in Vivian’s house.

Inside was a birth record.

May you like

A record that changed everything.

Because Elena’s daughter wasn’t the first baby Vivian tried to erase.
