Chapter 2 — The Son They Could Never Reach

Silence consumed the Sterling mansion.

No one moved.

The television continued broadcasting live from the airport, where hundreds of reporters struggled to keep pace with the black convoy escorting Elias Lancaster—no, Elias Sterling no longer existed.

The name on the screen read:

ELIAS LANCASTER — RIGHTFUL HEIR TO THE LANCASTER DYNASTY

Victor Sterling slowly lowered himself into his chair.

His hands shook.

"I... I sent my own son to hell."

The attorney closed the evidence folder.

"You sent an innocent boy there."

Mrs. Sterling burst into tears.

"I remember..."

Her voice cracked.

"He begged me."

The memory struck every person in the room.

Two years earlier.

Rain poured across the courthouse steps.

Seventeen-year-old Elias, wrists handcuffed, had looked at his family one last time.

"I didn't do it."

Nobody answered.

Instead, Julian had wrapped an arm around his mother.

"Don't listen to him."

Victor had turned his back.

The prison transport door slammed shut.

That had been the last time they saw him.

Until today.

Julian suddenly stood.

"This proves nothing!"

The attorney slowly looked at him.

"It proves everything."

He placed another document on the table.

"The police reopened the investigation three months ago."

Julian frowned.

"What investigation?"

"The anonymous emails."

Victor's head snapped upward.

The attorney continued calmly.

"They traced every fabricated accusation... to a private server registered under your name."

Julian's face lost all color.

"No..."

"The financial transfers."

"The fake witnesses."

"The edited surveillance footage."

"Every piece of evidence originated from you."

Mrs. Sterling stared at her eldest son as though seeing a stranger.

"You..."

Julian backed away.

"It wasn't supposed to go this far."

Victor rose.

"What did you just say?"

"I only wanted him gone!"

The room froze.

Julian realized he had spoken too much.

Victor crossed the room in two strides.

"You destroyed your brother's life."

"You were always going to choose him!"

"No!"

Julian shouted.

"You always loved him more!"

"I watched him get praised while I lived in his shadow!"

"So I made sure you'd never look at him again!"

Mrs. Sterling collapsed into a chair.

"Oh God..."

Julian laughed bitterly.

"And now you're crying?"

"You watched them drag him away."

"You signed every document."

"You abandoned him."

"Don't pretend you're innocent."

Nobody could answer.

Because he was right.

The Sterlings had believed the lies...

But they had chosen not to question them.

At that exact moment, every television channel switched to a live press conference.

Leonard Lancaster stepped before the microphones.

His voice was calm.

"My son suffered unimaginable cruelty because another family failed to protect him."

The reporters fell silent.

Leonard looked directly into the cameras.

"We are not interested in revenge."

"We are interested in justice."

Then Elias stepped beside him.

His expression remained unreadable.

One reporter shouted,

"Mr. Lancaster!"

"Will you ever forgive the Sterling family?"

Elias looked into the camera.

For several long seconds...

He said nothing.

Then he answered.

"I no longer have a family by that name."

The broadcast ended.

And every member of the Sterling family understood...

May you like

They had not merely lost Elias.

They had lost him forever.
