CHAPTER 1 â THE MAN THEY CAME TO ARREST

âTarget confirmed.â
The words passed through the security officerâs earpiece just as the orchestra played its final note.
Then the ballroom fell silent.
Julian Ashford stood beneath the largest chandelier, surrounded by three hundred people who had spent years pretending to be his friends.
No one moved to help him.
No one even asked what was happening.
They simply stepped away.
That was how power worked in New York.
People stood close when they wanted something.
They disappeared when danger arrived.
Six officers in black suits formed a circle around Julian. Their hands remained near their jackets.
At the ballroom entrance stood Special Agent Mara Vance of the Federal Financial Crimes Bureau.
She was forty-one, composed, and dressed in a simple black evening gown that allowed her to blend in with the guests.
Only the badge in her hand revealed why she was there.
âJulian Ashford,â she said. âYou are under investigation for securities fraud, bribery, money laundering, and conspiracy to obstruct justice.â
Quiet gasps spread across the ballroom.
A senator lowered his champagne glass.
A federal judge turned his face away.
Several investors reached for their phones, only to remember that all devices had been collected at the entrance.
Julian remained calm.
âInvestigation?â he asked.
âFor now.â
Mara approached him.
âWe have evidence that Ashford Capital moved more than six hundred million dollars through shell companies connected to organized crime.â
Julian looked around the room.
He saw men whose campaigns he had funded.
Judges whose charities he had supported.
Executives whose companies he had rescued.
Not one of them met his eyes.
Then he noticed his younger brother, Sebastian Ashford, standing near the stage.
Sebastian wore a black tuxedo and a small, satisfied smile.
Julian understood immediately.
The black envelope inside his jacket suddenly felt heavier.
âYou should search the room before you search me,â Julian said.
Maraâs expression did not change.
âWhy?â
âBecause the man who gave you that evidence is standing twenty feet behind you.â
Every head turned toward Sebastian.
His smile vanished.
âJulian is stalling,â Sebastian said. âHe knows itâs over.â
Julian slowly removed the sealed black envelope from his jacket.
Several officers reached toward their weapons.
Julian held it in the air.
âThis contains the names of every person who helped steal Ashford Capital from me.â
Sebastianâs face hardened.
Mara extended her hand.
âGive it to me.â
Julian looked directly at his brother.
âI was going to expose you after the gala.â
Sebastian stepped forward.
âYouâre delusional.â
âNo,â Julian said quietly. âI was blind.â
Before Mara could take the envelope, every light in the ballroom went out.
Someone screamed.
Glass shattered.
A gunshot cracked through the darkness.
When the emergency lights flickered on, Julian was still standing.
May you like
But Mara Vance was on the marble floor.
And the black envelope was gone.
