Chapter 7 - THE SECOND DISAPPEARANCE

For six days, police searched the Blackwater River.

They found Vanessa’s coat.

Her phone.

Blood on the rocks.

They did not find Vanessa.

Reporters called it a tragic ending.

Evelyn called it a warning.

“She’s alive.”

Arthur agreed.

Clara overheard them talking at the safe house.

“How do you know?”

Evelyn turned.

“You should be sleeping.”

“So should you.”

Arthur almost smiled.

Evelyn sat beside Clara.

“Vanessa once survived that cliff.”

“So did you.”

“Yes.”

“Then she could do it again.”

“Yes.”

Clara stared at her hands.

“Is Dad going to prison?”

“Probably.”

“For how long?”

“I don’t know.”

“Do you hate him?”

Evelyn considered the question.

“I hate what he did.”

“That’s not what I asked.”

“No.”

Clara looked surprised.

“I loved your father for a long time.”

“Even now?”

“Love doesn’t always disappear when someone hurts you.”

Evelyn touched Clara’s hand.

“But love also doesn’t erase consequences.”

The next morning, federal prosecutors showed Evelyn what they had recovered.

Daniel had begun cooperating.

He confessed to fraud.

Forgery.

Bribery.

Obstruction.

And helping Vanessa cover up Evelyn’s attempted murder.

But Daniel revealed something unexpected.

Vanessa had kept insurance.

Files.

Recordings.

Evidence against everyone she worked with.

Including Daniel.

“She called it the coffin,” Daniel told investigators.

“Where is it?”

“I don’t know.”

“You expect us to believe that?”

“She never trusted me enough.”

Then Daniel said something that changed everything.

“She trusted Clara.”

The prosecutor frowned.

“What?”

Daniel explained.

Months earlier, Vanessa had created a bank account in Clara’s name.

Evelyn stared through the observation glass.

“Why?”

Daniel shook his head.

“I don’t know.”

That evening, Evelyn searched Clara’s belongings from the mansion.

Inside a jewelry box was a tiny brass key.

Clara had never seen it.

Attached was a tag.

B-317.

Arthur recognized the numbering system.

“Union Station.”

Evelyn looked at him.

“Storage lockers.”

They went immediately.

Locker B-317 contained a black suitcase.

Inside were passports.

Cash.

A laptop.

And dozens of flash drives.

Arthur exhaled.

“The coffin.”

Evelyn opened the laptop.

A password screen appeared.

Clara noticed a silver bird icon in the corner.

“Mom.”

“What?”

“The necklace.”

Evelyn looked at her.

Clara explained.

Vanessa had kept Evelyn’s necklace.

Perhaps not as a trophy.

Perhaps as a key.

The necklace had been recovered from the pumping station.

An agent brought it.

Arthur examined the bird pendant.

He pressed one wing.

It opened.

Inside was a tiny memory chip.

Evelyn inserted it into the laptop.

The screen unlocked.

Hundreds of folders appeared.

Financial records.

Audio recordings.

Photographs.

Then Clara saw one labeled with her name.

CLARA.

Evelyn clicked it.

A video opened.

Vanessa appeared on screen.

She was sitting in Daniel’s study.

The date was two months earlier.

“If you’re watching this,” Vanessa said, “then something has gone wrong.”

She smiled into the camera.

“And if Evelyn Whitmore is alive, tell her congratulations.”

Evelyn leaned closer.

Vanessa continued.

“She won.”

A pause.

“For now.”

Then Vanessa held up a photograph.

It showed Clara leaving school.

Taken from across the street.

“I’ve been planning for every possible ending.”

Vanessa smiled.

“Even the one where I have to disappear.”

The video ended.

Clara whispered, “She was planning this before the wedding.”

May you like

Evelyn nodded.

Then the safe-house alarm began screaming.
