CHAPTER 5 — THE MAN WHO REFUSED TO DIE

Richard Hawthorne walked into the cellar as though returning from a business trip.

Nathaniel stared at him.

“You let us bury an empty coffin.”

“It was necessary.”

“You let your grandchildren believe you were dead.”

Richard glanced at Oliver.

“Children recover.”

Oliver moved behind Elena.

Richard’s eyes shifted to Evelyn.

“You should have given Margaret the codes.”

“You tried to kill me,” Evelyn said.

“No. Margaret made an emotional decision.”

Margaret’s face tightened, but she said nothing.

Richard turned to Elena.

“And you must be the new nanny.”

Elena held his gaze.

“You pay well.”

Richard almost smiled.

“I admire courage. Unfortunately, courage often looks like stupidity from inside a grave.”

One of the guards stepped toward Elena.

Nathaniel raised both hands.

“Let them go. I’ll give you whatever you want.”

“What I want belongs to Oliver.”

Nathaniel frowned.

Richard explained that years earlier, he had transferred controlling shares of Hawthorne Global into a trust. The shares would pass to Oliver on his ninth birthday.

Until then, both parents had to authorize any changes.

Evelyn had refused.

“So you kept her alive for her signature,” Elena said.

Richard nodded.

“And now?”

“Now we simplify matters.”

He looked toward Margaret.

“Take Evelyn upstairs. Nathaniel and the nanny will have an accident.”

Margaret did not move.

Richard’s voice sharpened.

“You heard me.”

“For two years, I protected your operation,” Margaret said. “You promised me twenty percent.”

“You were an employee.”

“I became a criminal for you.”

“You were always a criminal.”

For the first time, Elena saw hatred in Margaret’s eyes.

Richard had made a mistake.

He had humiliated the one person holding the gun closest to him.

Margaret raised the weapon.

But Calvin fired first.

The bullet struck Margaret’s shoulder.

Chaos erupted.

Nathaniel shoved Evelyn and Oliver behind the stone wine racks.

Elena grabbed a heavy bottle and struck Calvin across the face.

The gun fell.

Richard lunged for it.

Oliver suddenly ran forward and kicked it beneath a cabinet.

Richard seized the boy.

“Give me the access code,” he shouted at Nathaniel.

Nathaniel froze.

Richard pressed a knife against Oliver’s throat.

Evelyn tried to stand.

“Let him go!”

Richard tightened his grip.

Elena watched Oliver’s face.

He was terrified, but his eyes moved toward her.

Then toward the fire alarm on the wall.

Elena understood.

She grabbed a bottle of high-proof brandy and threw it against the cellar furnace.

Nathaniel struck the furnace switch.

Flames rose instantly.

The sprinkler system activated.

Water exploded from the ceiling.

The fire alarm screamed through the mansion.

Richard lost his grip for one second.

Oliver bit his hand and ran.

Nathaniel tackled his father.

Elena dragged Oliver toward Evelyn.

Margaret, bleeding heavily, reached for Calvin’s dropped gun.

She aimed it at Richard.

“Margaret,” Elena warned.

Richard laughed.

“You won’t shoot me.”

Margaret’s expression became strangely peaceful.

“No,” she said. “But I’ll make sure they hear everything.”

She pulled a small recording device from inside her uniform.

A red light blinked.

Every word in the cellar had been captured.

Richard’s face went white.

Sirens sounded beyond the mansion gates.

The automatic fire alarm had contacted emergency services.

Richard ran toward the tunnel.

Elena followed.

“Where are you going?” Nathaniel shouted.

May you like

“If he reaches the harbor, he disappears again.”

She entered the tunnel just as the hidden door slammed shut behind her.
