THE WEDDING NIGHT TRAP / Chapter 9 / 15

Chapter 9 - NO ONE WAS COMING TO SAVE HER

The surveillance van lost power at 11:56 p.m.

Ortiz grabbed her radio.

Dead.

Bell checked his phone.

No signal.

“What the hell?”

Outside, two black SUVs blocked the alley.

Ortiz looked through the windshield.

“Cole security.”

Bell’s face tightened.

“They can’t touch a police unit.”

“They don’t need to.”

She pointed upward.

A construction crew had closed both ends of the block.

Permits.

Barricades.

Utility trucks.

All legal-looking.

All perfectly timed.

Victoria Cole had built a delay, not an attack.

Five minutes could be enough.

Back in the penthouse, Victoria watched Emma process the video.

“You expected cavalry.”

Emma remained still.

“No.”

Victoria smiled.

“You’re lying.”

“I expected evidence.”

That smile weakened.

Emma reached into the torn waist of her wedding dress and pulled out a thin plastic strip.

Julian frowned.

“What is that?”

“A dead-man relay.”

Emma looked at Victoria.

“If I don’t cancel it by midnight, copies of everything we collected go to twelve journalists, three federal prosecutors and every member of the Cole Industries board.”

Silence.

Rachel stared at her.

“You never told me that.”

“You didn’t need to know.”

Julian moved toward Emma.

“You’re bluffing.”

“Four minutes.”

He checked his watch.

11:56.

Victoria’s composure changed.

Only slightly.

But Emma saw it.

“Where is the device?”

Emma smiled.

“There are several.”

Julian grabbed her arm.

“Tell me.”

Emma looked down at his hand.

“Remove it.”

He squeezed harder.

“Tell me where it is.”

Emma twisted free.

Julian stumbled.

Victoria snapped, “Stop acting like an animal!”

He turned on her.

“She ruined everything!”

“You ruined everything when you started talking!”

Emma almost couldn’t believe her luck.

Julian stared at his mother.

“You told me she couldn’t hurt us.”

“I told you not to confess!”

“You said Warren would handle her!”

“After you got the signature!”

“What signature?” Emma asked.

Both went silent.

Emma looked between them.

“There it is.”

Victoria’s face hardened.

Emma stepped closer.

“What were you making me sign?”

Julian’s anger overpowered caution.

“Nothing you’ll ever see.”

Victoria shouted, “Julian!”

Too late.

Emma smiled.

“Was it the trust?”

Julian froze.

Emma had guessed.

His reaction confirmed it.

She continued.

“The Cole Family Voting Trust transfers after marriage.”

Victoria stood.

“Enough.”

Emma finally understood.

The marriage wasn’t just about control.

Julian’s grandfather’s trust required Julian to remain legally married for one year before he received permanent voting control of Cole Industries.

A divorce could trigger review.

A dead or institutionalized spouse under guardianship was different.

Emma whispered, “You needed a wife who couldn’t leave.”

Victoria said nothing.

Julian’s face told the rest.

Emma stared at him.

“So that’s why me.”

“You were convenient.”

“Quiet.”

“Yes.”

“Alone.”

“Yes.”

“Easy to erase.”

Julian smiled bitterly.

“Yes.”

The earring microphone captured everything.

11:58.

Emma took a step back.

Victoria noticed the tiny movement.

Her eyes went to Emma’s ear.

Then widened.

“Julian.”

He looked at her.

“The earring.”

Emma turned.

Too late.

Julian ripped the pearl from her ear.

A burst of static exploded in Ortiz’s headphones.

Then silence again.

Victoria crushed the earring beneath her heel.

11:59.

Julian looked at Emma.

“One minute.”

Emma stared at the clock.

Victoria smiled.

“If your relay is real, cancel it.”

Emma shook her head.

“No.”

Julian picked up the syringe.

“Then we’ll make you.”

The clock changed.

May you like

MIDNIGHT.

Every phone in the room started ringing at once.
