Chapter 4 - CLAIRE’S ROOM

Arthur stood in the doorway like a man walking into his own past.
Claire’s perfume was gone.
Her clothes had been boxed years ago.
But the room still held small pieces of her.
A paperback beside the bed.
A chipped coffee mug on the shelf.
A photograph of Lucas missing his two front teeth.
Arthur had never been able to change the room.
Now someone else had entered it.
Detective Serena Cole crouched beside the footprint.
“Women’s shoe.”
Maya looked at Isabella’s closet across the hall.
“Could be hers.”
Serena nodded.
“Could be.”
Arthur walked to the bed.
“Lucas said the box was under here.”
They found scratches on the floorboards.
One board lifted.
Beneath it was an empty space.
Arthur stared.
“She knew.”
Maya looked at him.
“Claire?”
“She hid something from me.”
“Maybe she was trying to protect you.”
“By not telling me?”
Maya didn’t answer.
She had learned long ago that people rarely kept secrets for only one reason.
David Hale entered carrying his laptop.
“We found Peter’s car.”
Arthur turned quickly.
“Where?”
“Airport parking.”
“He flew?”
“No record of him boarding.”
“So he abandoned the car.”
“Yes.”
David opened the laptop.
“And Denise Crowley used her badge at headquarters forty minutes ago.”
Arthur frowned.
“She came back?”
“Apparently.”
Serena called units to the building.
Then Maya noticed a photograph inside Claire’s nightstand.
Arthur and Claire on their wedding day.
Behind the frame, something had been taped.
A tiny brass key.
Arthur stared at it.
“That isn’t the key to this room.”
Maya turned it over.
A number had been engraved on one side.
317.
David recognized it first.
“Safe-deposit box.”
Arthur looked at him.
“How do you know?”
“That’s the numbering format used by Montgomery Private Bank.”
Arthur’s family owned a minority stake in the bank.
Arthur took the key.
“Can we access it tonight?”
David nodded.
“If it’s still active.”
Serena held out her hand.
“It may be evidence.”
Arthur reluctantly gave it to her.
An hour later, they entered the bank vault.
Box 317 was registered to Claire Montgomery.
The paperwork had never been canceled.
Inside were three envelopes.
A flash drive.
A handwritten journal.
And a letter addressed to Arthur.
His hands shook when he opened it.
Arthur,
If you’re reading this, then I was right to be afraid.
He stopped.
Maya watched from several feet away.
Arthur continued reading silently.
His face lost color.
David finally asked, “What does it say?”
Arthur handed him the letter.
Claire had discovered unexplained transfers from the family foundation.
Small at first.
Then millions.
The approvals carried Peter Sloan’s authorization.
But Peter wasn’t the only name.
Arthur read the final paragraph aloud.
“I confronted Peter. He told me I was imagining things because I was sick. I wanted to believe him. Then I discovered someone inside our legal office had been changing the trust records.”
David stopped breathing.
Maya looked at him.
Arthur slowly lowered the letter.
“David?”
David shook his head.
“No.”
Arthur’s voice hardened.
“Claire specifically wrote legal office.”
“That could mean six people.”
Serena asked, “Who had access?”
David swallowed.
“Me.”
Arthur stared.
“Who else?”
“My deputy.”
“Name.”
David looked toward the vault door.
“Denise Crowley.”
Everyone went quiet.
The records manager who had disappeared with Peter.
Serena’s phone rang.
She answered.
Then her expression changed.
“What?”
Arthur stepped closer.
“Did they find Denise?”
Serena ended the call.
“Yes.”
“Where?”
“Montgomery Holdings.”
“Alive?”
Serena hesitated.
“Yes.”
Arthur exhaled.
Then she added:
“But she says Peter didn’t kidnap her.”
Arthur frowned.
“What?”
“She says she went with him voluntarily.”
“Why?”
Serena looked directly at David.
May you like
“Because she says David Hale is the one they were running from.”
