CHAPTER 2 — The Secret Behind Rosie’s Mother
Elliot brought Maddie and Rosie to the private medical center connected to Whitaker Financial.
Doctors examined Rosie immediately.
The results were worse than expected.
“She’s severely underfed,” the doctor explained.
Elliot stood silently beside the hospital bed.
The words burned.
Severely underfed.
A baby.
In a city full of wealth.
A baby had gone hungry.
Maddie sat beside Rosie, holding her tiny hand.
“Is she going to be okay?”
The doctor looked at the little girl.
Then smiled gently.
“She will be.”
Maddie finally released the breath she had been holding.
A tear rolled down her cheek.
But she quickly wiped it away.
Elliot noticed.
“You don’t have to hide when you’re scared.”
Maddie looked at him.
“My mom always said crying wastes energy.”
Elliot sat beside her.
“Your mom sounds like a strong woman.”
“She was.”
Maddie reached into her coat pocket.
She pulled out an old envelope.
Inside was a photograph.
A young woman holding baby Rosie.
Elliot studied it.
Then his eyes narrowed.
Because he recognized the woman.
“Where did you get this?”
Maddie looked confused.
“It’s my mom.”
Elliot stared at the picture.
The woman was named Clara.
Years ago, Clara had worked at Whitaker Financial.
She had been one of the most talented employees in the company.
Then one day…
She disappeared.
No explanation.
No goodbye.
Elliot remembered.
She had tried to report financial fraud inside the company.
A powerful executive had threatened her.
Then she vanished.
“Maddie,” Elliot said slowly.
“Did your mother ever mention my company?”
The girl nodded.
“She said there were bad people here.”
Elliot’s face hardened.
“Bad people?”
“She said she found something.”
The room became silent.
“What did she find?”
Maddie reached into the envelope again.
This time she pulled out a small folded piece of paper.
“My mom told me never to give this to anyone unless we had no other choice.”
Elliot carefully opened it.
His heart stopped.
It was evidence.
Bank records.
Names.
Hidden payments.
Proof that someone inside his company had been stealing millions.
And Clara had discovered it.
She had risked everything to expose the truth.
Elliot looked at Maddie.
The little girl who walked into his building asking for a job wasn’t just fighting hunger.
She was carrying a secret that could destroy powerful people.
“Maddie…”
She looked up.
“Yes?”
“Your mother didn’t abandon you.”
A confused expression crossed her face.
“She didn’t?”
“No.”
Elliot folded the paper carefully.
“She was trying to protect you.”
For the first time since entering the building…
Maddie cried.
Not loudly.
