CHAPTER 1 — The Face Behind the Iron Prison

The entire cathedral held its breath.

Prince Elias’s fingers closed around the serpent-shaped iron latch.

For twenty years, everyone in Bellavere had been told the same thing.

Princess Seraphine’s helmet was a sacred tradition.

A symbol of purity.

A royal vow of silence before marriage.

A custom older than the kingdom itself.

But Elias had studied history.

And he knew the truth.

There had never been such a tradition.

Not once.

The helmet was not a crown.

It was not a ceremony.

It was a prison.

The moment his fingers moved, a sharp metallic sound echoed through the cathedral.

The nobles lowered their eyes.

The soldiers stiffened.

King Odran’s expression finally changed.

Only slightly.

But Elias saw it.

Fear.

Not anger.

Not disappointment.

Fear.

“Stop.”

The king’s voice traveled across the cathedral.

Everyone froze.

Elias slowly turned.

“Why?”

The question was simple.

But it shook the entire room.

King Odran stepped forward.

“Because you do not understand what you are about to release.”

Elias stared at him.

“I am about to see my wife’s face.”

A wave of whispers moved through the crowd.

The king’s jaw tightened.

“You think this is about a face?”

Silence.

“It is about a truth that could bring war back to our borders.”

Elias looked at Seraphine.

She still stood completely still.

But then…

Something happened.

A tiny movement.

Her fingers curled slightly around her wedding bouquet.

The first sign of emotion anyone had seen from her.

Elias noticed.

And that was enough.

“She wants me to open it,” he said quietly.

The king’s eyes darkened.

“No.”

Elias stepped closer.

“She never wanted this helmet.”

For the first time, Princess Seraphine moved.

Slowly.

Painfully.

She turned her helmet toward Elias.

And from inside the ancient iron prison came a whisper.

A voice almost too weak to hear.

“Please…”

Everyone stopped breathing.

“Open it.”

The cathedral exploded with shock.

The king immediately shouted:

“Guards!”

But Elias moved faster.

His hand pulled the latch.

The ancient lock cracked.

The helmet opened.

And the entire kingdom saw the secret King Odran had buried for eighteen years.

Princess Seraphine was not disfigured.

She was not cursed.

She was not dangerous.

She was wearing the helmet because someone wanted the world to believe she was.

Her face was beautiful.

But behind her left ear…

Was a small royal birthmark.

The symbol of the lost bloodline of House Valorian.

The family King Odran had supposedly destroyed.

The family whose murder had started the border war.

The cathedral went silent.

Because everyone understood the impossible truth.

Princess Seraphine was not the daughter of King Odran.

She was the last surviving heir of the kingdom Bellavere had once conquered.

Elias looked at the king.

“You married me to your enemy.”

King Odran did not deny it.

Instead, he smiled.

A cold, terrifying smile.

“No.”

May you like

He whispered.

“I married you to the only person who can save my kingdom.”
