Chapter 11 - REBECCA'S LAST LIE

Rebecca had still done terrible things.
The note.
The school.
The forged documents.
The cameras.
The manipulation.
Nothing erased that.
But the kidnapping hadn't been part of her plan.
Nathan had panicked.
He believed Sarah's journal could send him and his father to prison.
He took Emily to force me to surrender it.
Rebecca followed him.
According to Emily, Rebecca argued with Nathan for nearly an hour.
“She told him I wasn't supposed to get hurt,” Emily said.
That sentence chilled me.
Wasn't supposed to get hurt.
Meaning Rebecca had always expected Emily to suffer somehow.
Just not physically.
At the police station, Rebecca finally asked to talk.
Her attorney sat beside her.
I almost refused.
Then she said she knew where Sarah's missing pages were.
I went in.
Rebecca looked nothing like a bride anymore.
No makeup.
Messy hair.
Gray jail clothes.
“You hate me,” she said.
“Yes.”
“I did love you.”
“No.”
Her eyes filled.
“I did.”
“You don't do this to people you love.”
She looked down.
“I wanted the life.”
There it was.
Not me.
The life.
“The house.”
“The security.”
“The money.”
“You wanted Emily's trust.”
“At first, no.”
“When did that change?”
“When Nathan told me how much it was worth.”
She admitted the plan.
Marry me.
Convince me Emily needed residential treatment.
Use manipulated footage if I resisted.
Eventually gain financial authority.
Pay Nathan's debts.
Then reimburse the trust before anyone noticed.
I laughed.
“You expected me to believe that?”
“No.”
“Good.”
“What about the insurance?”
Rebecca began crying.
“Nathan did that.”
“And ACCIDENT WINDOW?”
“He wrote it.”
“Did you know?”
She didn't answer.
That was answer enough.
“You knew he was considering killing me.”
“I didn't think he meant it.”
“You still got on the plane.”
She covered her face.
I stood.
“Where are Sarah's missing pages?”
Rebecca looked up.
“Your wedding ring.”
I stared at her.
“What?”
“The box.”
“The ring came in a wooden box.”
“Yes.”
“Sarah's pages are under the lining.”
“How do you know?”
“Because I found them.”
“Why didn't you destroy them?”
Rebecca's expression changed.
“Because they proved something I needed to know.”
“What?”
She leaned forward.
“Sarah wasn't poisoned by my father.”
My stomach tightened.
“Who did it?”
May you like
Rebecca whispered:
“Nathan.”
