CHAPTER 2 — The Woman Who Raised My Children

The police arrived twenty minutes later.

Victoria tried to control the situation immediately.

She cried.

She acted frightened.

She told them Emily had attacked her.

That Emily had become unstable.

That she had tied herself up to frame her.

For years, Victoria had mastered one thing.

Making people believe whatever story she wanted.

But this time…

She had made one mistake.

She forgot there were cameras.

The detective showed me the security footage from the hallway.

My hands tightened into fists.

On the screen, Victoria entered the nursery.

Holding wine.

Walking calmly.

Exactly as Emily described.

Then hours later…

Victoria left.

Emily never did.

The detective looked at me.

“Mr. Cole, your nanny was telling the truth.”

I couldn’t answer.

I just watched the woman I married walk away from my children’s room like nothing happened.

Like Emily wasn’t bleeding.

Like my babies weren’t trapped against her.

Then came the second discovery.

The detective opened another file.

“Sir, we found something else.”

He placed a document on the table.

A DNA report.

My hands trembled as I picked it up.

The results were clear.

The twins were not biologically mine.

The world became silent.

I couldn’t hear anything.

Not the detective.

Not the officers.

Not even my own breathing.

I thought about every night I held them.

Every morning they smiled at me.

Every time they called me “Daddy.”

A DNA test could change biology.

But it couldn’t erase love.

Still…

I needed the truth.

I confronted Victoria that night.

She was sitting in the living room.

Calm.

Almost peaceful.

“You know now,” she said.

I stared at her.

“How long?”

She looked at me.

“How long did you know they weren’t mine?”

Victoria didn’t answer.

That was the answer.

My heart broke.

“Who is their father?”

For the first time, Victoria looked ashamed.

“A man from my past.”

“A man you told me was gone.”

I laughed bitterly.

“You lied about my children.”

She stood.

“You don’t understand.”

“No.”

I shook my head.

“I understand perfectly.”

“You destroyed Emily because she knew.”

Victoria’s expression changed.

“She was going to ruin everything.”

Everything.

That word stayed in my mind.

Not our marriage.

Not our family.

Everything.

“What else are you hiding?”

Victoria looked away.

And that silence told me there was more.

Much more.

The next morning, Emily gave me a small envelope.

“I found this hidden behind the nursery wall.”

I opened it.

Inside was an old photograph.

Victoria.

A man I had never seen.

And a newborn baby.

On the back of the photo were six words:

“The truth was never buried.”
