Chapter 4 – The First Complete Sentence

Sunrise painted Mercer House in soft gold.

Logan canceled every meeting.

Every board conference.

Every wedding appointment.

He only made one phone call.

"Ms. Cruz."

"The engagement is over."

Silence answered him.

Then Vanessa laughed.

"You can't be serious."

"I watched the security footage."

Her laughter stopped instantly.

"You manipulated a two-year-old."

"You taught him to fear speaking."

"You made my son believe I would stop loving him."

Her voice became cold.

"You have no proof."

"I have dozens of recordings."

"And every one of them has already been copied."

The line went dead.

Within an hour, her belongings were removed from the estate.

Within a week, every wedding contract had been canceled.

Within a month, Noah's therapists noticed something remarkable.

The nightmares became less frequent.

His hands stopped shaking.

He laughed.

Tiny laughs at first.

Then bigger ones.

One rainy afternoon, Logan sat on the living-room floor helping Noah stack colorful wooden blocks.

One tower collapsed.

Logan pretended to look shocked.

"Oh no."

"We'll have to build another one."

Noah giggled.

A real giggle.

Then he looked directly into his father's eyes.

For several long seconds, neither of them moved.

Finally...

The little boy smiled.

"I love you, Daddy."

The sentence was soft.

Clear.

Perfect.

Logan didn't answer immediately.

He couldn't.

His vision blurred as tears filled his eyes.

He gathered Noah into his arms and held him tighter than he had ever held anything in his life.

"I love you too, buddy."

"More than every company."

"More than every dollar."

"More than anything."

Outside, the rain continued to fall.

Inside Mercer House, the silence that had haunted its halls for nearly a year was finally broken.

Not by wealth.

Not by power.

Not by medicine.

But by something Noah had needed all along.

To know—

May you like

without fear, without doubt, and without condition—

that he was finally safe.
