CHAPTER 1 — The Attorney’s Promise

The ambulance doors slammed shut.

But Harrison Cole didn’t move.

He stood in the middle of the courthouse steps, watching the vehicle carrying his sister disappear into the distance.

For twenty years, Harrison had built a reputation on never showing weakness.

He had destroyed corporations.

Exposed corrupt politicians.

Sent powerful men to prison.

People called him the man who could kill a billion-dollar empire with one sentence in court.

But none of that mattered anymore.

Because the person inside that ambulance wasn’t a client.

She was Khloe.

His little sister.

The girl who used to hide behind him during thunderstorms.

The girl who called him after her first heartbreak.

The girl who believed there was still good in everyone.

And now

Someone had tried to take her life.

Harrison turned slowly toward the courthouse.

Vanessa Kensington was surrounded by police officers.

Her expensive dress was wrinkled.

Her makeup was perfect.

But her confidence was gone.

“I didn’t mean to push her,” Vanessa whispered.

“It was an accident.”

Nobody answered.

Because everyone had seen it.

Including Harrison.

Richard Harrington stepped forward.

“Harrison, listen
”

For the first time, Harrison looked at his brother-in-law.

The man who promised to protect Khloe.

The man whose child she carried.

“You watched her fall.”

Richard swallowed.

“I was shocked.”

“No.”

Harrison’s voice was quiet.

That made it worse.

“You were afraid.”

Richard looked away.

Harrison walked closer.

“You weren’t afraid for my sister.”

A pause.

“You were afraid of what I would do.”

Richard’s face changed.

Because he knew.

The investigation had already started.

And Harrison Cole never lost a war he entered.

Three hours later, Harrison sat beside Khloe’s hospital bed.

Machines surrounded her.

Her face was pale.

Her hand rested on her stomach.

The doctor entered slowly.

“She and the baby are stable.”

Harrison finally breathed.

“But there is something you should know.”

Harrison looked up.

“The fall caused serious trauma. The next twenty-four hours are critical.”

After the doctor left, Harrison held Khloe’s hand.

A tear fell from his eye.

Something nobody had seen in years.

“I’m sorry.”

Khloe slowly opened her eyes.

“Harry
”

“I should have protected you.”

She weakly squeezed his hand.

“You can’t protect me from everything.”

Harrison looked at her.

“Yes.”

His voice became colder.

“But I can protect you from them.”

The next morning, Harrison entered his private law office.

On the table were three folders.

Richard Harrington.

Vanessa Kensington.

Harrington Commercial Group.

His assistant placed another document in front of him.

“Mr. Cole
 we found something.”

Harrison opened it.

Bank transfers.

Hidden accounts.

Messages.

Evidence.

Then one final image.

A photo of Richard and Vanessa together.

Smiling.

Planning their future.

While Khloe was fighting to become a mother.

Harrison stared at the picture.

Then quietly closed the folder.

“Good.”

His assistant looked confused.

“Good?”

May you like

Harrison stood.

“Now I know exactly where to start.”
