Chapter 1: The Woman Behind the Lullaby

Andrew Whitmore had spent three years convincing himself that grief had a beginning and an end.
The world had told him to move on.
His friends told him that his wife was gone.
The newspapers called the fire at the Whitmore estate a tragic accident.
And Andrew had buried the woman he loved beside a white marble monument with her name carved into it.
Emily Whitmore.
His wife.
The mother of his twin boys.
The woman who had died saving her children.
But standing in the dining room that night, watching a maid sing the exact lullaby only Emily knew, Andrew felt something inside him collapse.
The woman in front of him was supposed to be a stranger.
A servant.
Someone who had entered his home only six months earlier.
Yet his sons were holding onto her like she was the only safe place left in the world.
Andrew stared at Elena.
“Who are you?”
The question came out colder than he intended.
Elena lowered her eyes.
“I’m sorry.”
“That’s not an answer.”
His voice shook slightly.
“You know a song my wife sang. You have the same scar she had. My children call you Mom.”
Victoria, the woman in the blue silk dress, stepped closer.
“Andrew, you’re letting your emotions control you.”
He turned toward her slowly.
For the first time in years, he noticed something strange.
Victoria wasn't shocked.
She wasn't confused.
She was afraid.
And that fear told him more than words ever could.
“Why are you scared?” Andrew asked.
Victoria froze.
“I’m not.”
“You are.”
Andrew looked back at Elena.
“Tell me the truth.”
Elena's eyes filled with tears.
“I didn't want them to know.”
“Know what?”
She took a deep breath.
Then she whispered:
“That I survived.”
The room became completely silent.
Andrew felt his heartbeat stop.
“Survived what?”
Elena looked at the two boys.
The children who had spent three years believing their mother was gone.
“The fire.”
Andrew stepped backward.
“No.”
Elena’s tears fell.
“I was trapped inside that night.”
“You’re lying.”
“I wish I was.”
Her voice broke.
“I remember the smoke. I remember the ceiling collapsing. I remember holding onto the boys’ bedroom door because I was trying to get back to them.”
Andrew stared at her.
“Emily died that night.”
Elena closed her eyes.
When she opened them again, the pain inside them was unbearable.
“My name isn't Elena.”
A pause.
“My name is Emily.”
Andrew couldn't move.
Victoria's face turned pale.
“No…”
Emily looked at her.
“Yes, Victoria.”
The name left Emily’s mouth like a weapon.
“You knew I survived.”
Andrew immediately turned toward Victoria.
“What did she just say?”
Victoria stepped back.
“Andrew, don’t listen to her.”
But the damage was done.
Because Andrew remembered something.
The official report.
The missing body.
The rushed funeral.
The private investigation that suddenly disappeared.
The questions he never got answers to.
Three years of lies.
Andrew looked at the woman who had stood beside him after his wife’s death.
The woman who had comforted his children.
The woman who claimed she wanted to help his family heal.
