Chapter 13 - What My Mother Burned

My mother was back at the estate by sunset.
Doctors argued.
She ignored them.
Four years without speech had not removed her talent for winning arguments.
We gathered in her bedroom.
Me.
Ewan.
Arthur.
Delia.
Marcus remained outside.
Not because I ordered him to.
Because he understood some doors had to be earned again.
My mother looked at all three sons.
Three.
Even thinking the number felt strange.
Delia placed the alphabet board beside her.
But my mother shook her head.
She wanted to speak.
Slowly.
Painfully.
We waited.
“Your father…”
She stopped.
Ewan leaned forward.
“Take your time.”
She looked at him.
Then tried again.
“Your father… was afraid.”
Arthur’s face tightened.
“Of August?”
She nodded.
“Before… August.”
She explained in fragments.
Malcolm Vale had inherited a dying dock business.
He borrowed money from men who collected debts with violence.
When the unions pushed back, Malcolm bribed officials.
When inspectors asked questions, he bribed them too.
Then one organizer died.
My father helped hide what happened.
August Vandermark discovered everything.
He offered protection.
In exchange, he took control quietly.
Then came Arthur.
My mother was twenty-one.
My father told her their baby died after a medical emergency.
In reality, August’s family took him as leverage.
My mother learned the truth years later.
Arthur looked physically ill.
“Why didn’t you find me?”
“I tried.”
“Forty years?”
“Malcolm…”
She closed her eyes.
“Threatened Damian.”
I felt the room tilt.
Me.
My father had used me to keep my mother quiet.
Ewan asked, “And Pier 44?”
She looked at him.
The night of the fire, my mother discovered August planned to use the old survivorship agreement.
Ewan had found financial records.
Celeste, using the name Celeste Ward, had gained his trust.
My mother learned they planned to kill Ewan and make me sole heir.
“So you started the fire?” Ewan asked.
She shook her head.
“No.”
“Celeste said—”
“Called.”
She struggled.
“Alarm.”
I understood.
“You triggered the first alarm.”
Yes.
“But then you called it off.”
Tears filled her eyes.
“Malcolm.”
My father had intercepted the alarm.
He told the fire marshal it was a malfunction.
Ewan looked crushed.
“Dad knew?”
Yes.
“Dad knew I was inside?”
My mother began crying.
Yes.
Ewan stood.
He walked toward the window.
For six years he had hated Vandermarks.
Now he learned our father had allowed the fire to happen.
I wanted to say something.
There was nothing.
My mother continued.
The ledger Celeste mentioned contained decades of Vale bribes.
But also something else.
Payments my father made after the fire.
To doctors.
To private investigators.
To a man who had found Ewan alive.
Ewan turned.
“What?”
My mother looked at him.
“Malcolm… knew.”
Ewan’s face went white.
“He knew I survived?”
Yes.
“For how long?”
She held up three trembling fingers.
“Three days?”
No.
“Three months?”
No.
“Three years?”
Yes.
My brother sat down.
Our father had known his son was alive for three years and told no one.
“Why?”
My mother’s eyes moved toward me.
Then Ewan.
Then Arthur.
Finally she forced out:
“Choice.”
I frowned.
“What choice?”
She began using the board.
Slowly.
One letter at a time.
MALCOLM HAD TO CHOOSE WHICH SON KEPT THE EMPIRE.
Arthur whispered, “And he chose Damian.”
My mother blinked once.
Yes.
I felt sick.
Everything I had inherited.
The businesses.
The house.
The men.
The name.
None of it had been a blessing.
It had been the prize in a contest I never knew existed.
Then my mother spelled three final words:
LEDGER STILL EXISTS.
Ewan stared.
“Where?”
My mother’s eyes moved toward the conservatory.
Delia inhaled sharply.
The room where Celeste had attacked her.
My mother spelled:
BENEATH THE GLASS.
I stood.
We went downstairs.
Under the conservatory floor, beneath the broken tiles where Delia’s blood had dried, we found a narrow iron compartment.
Inside was the ledger.
And on top of it sat a sealed envelope.
My name was written across the front.
In my father’s handwriting.
I opened it.
May you like
The first sentence read:
DAMIAN, IF YOU ARE READING THIS, THEN EWAN HAS COME HOME TO KILL YOU.
