Chapter 2 — The Secret Inside the Reports

The inspection continued.
Daniel walked through every section of the hotel.
The restaurant.
The guest rooms.
The staff areas.
At first, everyone tried to appear perfect.
Employees smiled too much.
Managers followed too closely.
Everything looked controlled.
But Daniel noticed the details others ignored.
A frightened young housekeeper avoiding eye contact.
A waiter quietly apologizing to guests for mistakes caused by poor training.
An employee working double shifts because another worker had quit.
Luxury was only on the surface.
Behind the beautiful walls were hidden problems.
In the afternoon, Daniel entered the staff office.
He placed a document on the table.
“This complaint was filed six months ago.”
Robert looked at it.
His expression changed.
“What complaint?”
Daniel looked directly at him.
“A former employee reported unsafe working conditions.”
Robert quickly replied.
“That was investigated. Nothing serious was found.”
Daniel slowly opened another file.
“Because the employee disappeared before the investigation was completed.”
The room became silent.
Claire, standing near the door, looked confused.
“What do you mean disappeared?”
Daniel turned to her.
“The employee was fired three days after reporting the problem.”
Everyone froze.
Robert’s face tightened.
“That’s impossible.”
Daniel placed photographs on the table.
“These are payroll records.”
Then another document.
“These are anonymous complaints.”
Then another.
“These are security reports that were never submitted.”
The truth began to unfold.
The hotel had been hiding problems for years.
Employees were threatened.
Complaints were ignored.
Managers cared more about reputation than people.
Daniel looked at Robert.
“You built a beautiful hotel.”
A pause.
“But you forgot the people who keep it standing.”
Robert’s confidence disappeared.
“I can explain.”
Daniel shook his head.
“Everyone explains after they get caught.”
At that moment, Claire stepped forward.
Her voice was quiet.
“Mr. Hayes…”
Everyone looked at her.
“I need to admit something.”
Robert stared at her.
“Claire, don’t.”
But she continued.
“I was wrong today.”
Her eyes lowered.
“I judged you because of your clothes.”
Daniel remained silent.
“And the worst part is…”
She looked around the lobby.
“I realize I have done that to other people before.”
For the first time that day, Daniel saw something different.
May you like
Not fear.
Regret.
