The Family Betrayal

CHAPTER 1: GET OUT

The slap landed so hard my head snapped to the side.

A stunned silence swallowed the dining room.

Slowly, I lifted a trembling hand to my burning cheek.

For one endless second, I couldn't breathe.

My mother had never laid a hand on me.

Not once.

Not in twenty-eight years.

Until tonight.

She had slapped me in front of everyone.

Our relatives.

Family friends.

Neighbors.

Even my boyfriend.

All because I dared to say one sentence.

"I don't think Chloe should inherit everything Dad left behind."

A smug smile spread across my younger sister's face.

She didn't even bother to hide it.

My mother pointed straight at the front door.

"Get out."

I stared at her, certain I had heard wrong.

"...What?"

"You heard me."

Her voice was cold enough to freeze the entire room.

"Get out of my house."

Those five words hurt far more than the slap.

Dad had been gone for only six weeks.

The flowers from his funeral had barely begun to wilt.

I was still mourning the man who had raised me.

Yet my mother had already started dividing up everything he had built...

And erasing me from it.

"Mom..."

"No."

She cut me off without the slightest hesitation.

"Chloe stayed here. She took care of me."

A bitter laugh escaped before I could stop it.

"She lives five minutes away."

My mother didn't even look at me.

"You left."

"For college," I shot back.

"That was ten years ago."

"Exactly."

The silence that followed was unbearable.

Everyone around that table knew it was wrong.

Every single one of them.

Yet no one spoke.

Not my uncle.

Not our neighbors.

Not even Jason...

The man who had promised he would always stand beside me.

He lowered his eyes...

And said nothing.

Coward.

Across the table, Chloe folded her arms, looking quietly pleased with herself.

"If you don't like it," she said sweetly, "the door is right there."

I looked at her.

Really looked at her.

And suddenly...

Every missing piece fell into place.

The brand-new luxury SUV.

The designer handbags she could never have afforded.

The expensive jewelry.

The strange confidence she'd developed the moment Dad died.

She had known.

She had known all along.

The inheritance had already been promised to her.

I picked up my bag.

Fine.

If they wanted me gone...

I'd leave.

I had barely reached the front door when—

Knock.

Knock.

Knock.

Three calm, deliberate knocks echoed through the silent house.

Everyone turned.

The front door opened.

A man in a perfectly tailored gray suit stepped inside, carrying a worn leather briefcase.

"Excuse me."

No one answered.

His eyes swept across the room until they landed on me.

"Miss Hannah Brooks?"

"Yes?"

Relief crossed his face.

"Finally."

He extended his hand.

"I've been trying to reach you for days."

My mother frowned.

"And who exactly are you?"

Without a word, the stranger calmly opened his briefcase and removed a thick stack of legal documents.

"My name is Robert Miller."

He paused just long enough for every pair of eyes in the room to settle on him.

"I was your father's attorney."

The color drained from my mother's face.

Chloe's confident smile vanished.

Then Robert looked directly at my mother...

And spoke the one sentence that brought the entire room to a standstill.

"I'm afraid there's been a very serious misunderstanding."

May you like

He closed the file with a quiet snap.

"...Because this house doesn't belong to you."
