Chapter 1 — The Ring Hit the Floor

The gold ring struck the marble with a sharp metallic click.

It was not loud.

But inside the ballroom, it sounded like a gunshot.

Lucas stood beneath the crystal chandeliers with six-year-old Emily clinging to his neck. Her small body trembled against his tuxedo. Her pink flower-girl dress was wrinkled, one sleeve was torn, and the white stuffed rabbit in her hand had lost an ear.

Across the room, Sophia stared at the ring lying between them.

Her face had gone pale.

“Lucas,” she whispered. “You don’t understand.”

He did not raise his voice.

That frightened her more.

“My daughter was locked in a bathroom during our wedding.”

Sophia swallowed. “I didn’t lock her in there.”

Emily buried her face against her father’s shoulder.

Lucas gently touched the back of her head.

“She pointed at you.”

“She’s confused.”

Emily pulled away just enough to look at Sophia.

“No, I’m not.”

The child’s voice was small, but the entire room heard it.

Sophia’s father, Richard Vale, stepped forward from the front row.

“This is ridiculous,” he snapped. “A child gets frightened, and suddenly my daughter is being accused in front of three hundred guests?”

Lucas slowly turned toward him.

“My child was begging for me behind a locked door.”

Richard’s jaw tightened.

Sophia took one careful step forward.

“Lucas, please. Let’s go somewhere private.”

“No.”

The word landed coldly.

“This happened in front of my family. It ends in front of them.”

A nervous murmur moved through the guests.

Then Emily lifted her hand and pointed at Sophia’s wedding gown.

“She hid something under there.”

Sophia’s expression changed.

Only for a second.

But Lucas saw it.

Her fingers pressed against the front of her dress.

Richard moved in front of her.

“That’s enough.”

Lucas looked from Richard to Sophia.

“What are you hiding?”

Sophia’s lips parted.

Nothing came out.

Then a woman near the back of the ballroom gasped.

May you like

A thin line of dark red liquid had begun running down the white lace of Sophia’s gown.

And it was coming from beneath the dress.
