Chapter 8 - THE SLAP THAT CHANGED THE CASE

Elliot watched the video once.

Then again.

Victoria’s hand striking Lila.

Lila staggering.

Her face turning toward the camera.

“You finally did it where the camera works.”

He closed the laptop.

Rachel watched him.

“You’re calm.”

“No.”

“You look calm.”

“That’s different.”

Victoria was arrested for misdemeanor assault.

By evening, Charles’s attorneys issued a statement accusing Elliot of manipulating events to ruin the Whitmore family.

Then a second attack landed.

A video surfaced online.

Lila shoving Peyton in a hallway.

No context.

Just four seconds.

Peyton stumbling.

Lila walking away.

The caption:

BILLIONAIRE’S DAUGHTER CAUGHT ATTACKING CLASSMATE.

Elliot looked at Lila.

“What happened before this?”

She stared at the screen.

“She took Mom’s necklace.”

“The key?”

“Yes.”

“She held it over the staircase.”

“She said she’d drop it.”

“So you shoved her?”

“Yes.”

Elliot nodded.

“Okay.”

Lila blinked.

“You’re not mad?”

“You shouldn’t have shoved her.”

“I know.”

“But four seconds isn’t the whole truth.”

Rachel located the full footage.

It showed Peyton taking the necklace.

Lila repeatedly asking for it back.

Peyton threatening to drop it.

Lila pushing her away.

Not good.

Not the story being sold either.

Elliot authorized release of the complete clip.

He also released nothing else.

Rachel frowned.

“You have enough evidence to crush their narrative.”

“Not yet.”

“Why wait?”

“Because someone wants me angry.”

“Charles?”

“Maybe.”

Elliot looked at the public attacks.

“They’re baiting me.”

“Into what?”

“Using power exactly the way they accuse me of using it.”

Rachel understood.

“If you pressure the school financially—”

“They call it extortion.”

“If you threaten donors—”

“They call it retaliation.”

“If I pull Lila out—”

“They say she lied.”

“So what do you do?”

Elliot looked at Claire’s letter.

“Nothing dramatic.”

Rachel smiled.

“That sounds painful for you.”

“It is.”

Instead, Elliot did something nobody expected.

He requested an independent investigation.

Not Mercer attorneys.

Not Ashbury attorneys.

A retired federal judge.

An outside child welfare specialist.

A forensic accounting team chosen by both sides.

Every finding would be public.

Ashbury refused.

That refusal changed the press narrative almost overnight.

Why would an innocent school reject independent review?

Parents began asking questions.

Then former students began contacting Elliot.

One.

Three.

Nine.

Twenty.

Stories arrived.

A scholarship boy suspended for defending himself after being hit.

A girl called “quota kid” by a donor’s son.

A student whose financial aid mysteriously vanished after his mother filed a complaint.

Noah Greene finally called.

“I have proof.”

Elliot met Noah and his parents in Queens.

Noah was fourteen.

Quiet.

Angry.

His mother placed a folder on the table.

“They said he stole a watch.”

Noah stared at the floor.

“He didn’t.”

His father said.

“The watch belonged to Dylan Pierce.”

“A trustee’s son.”

“They found it in Noah’s gym bag.”

Noah looked at Elliot.

“Because Dylan put it there.”

“How do you know?”

“His friend filmed him.”

Noah opened a video.

Dylan dropped the watch into Noah’s bag.

Then laughed.

“Why didn’t the school use this?”

Elliot asked.

Noah’s mother laughed bitterly.

“We gave it to Reed.”

“What did he say?”

“That video evidence from students could be manipulated.”

Lila sat beside Noah.

“What happened after?”

“They told me if I fought the suspension, they’d report theft to my next school.”

“So you left.”

Noah nodded.

Then he looked at Lila.

“They’ll keep doing it.”

Lila’s jaw tightened.

“No.”

Noah stared.

“What?”

“They won’t.”

For the first time, Elliot realized Lila no longer wanted simply to survive Ashbury.

She wanted to change it.

Then Rachel’s phone rang.

She stepped away.

When she returned, her expression was different.

“What happened?”

Elliot asked.

“Charles Whitmore was located.”

“Where?”

“JFK.”

“Trying to leave?”

“No.”

“He turned himself in.”

Elliot frowned.

“Why?”

Rachel held up her phone.

“He requested immunity discussions.”

“For what?”

“He says Evelyn Whitmore is not the person running the operation.”

Elliot stared.

“Then who is?”

Rachel’s answer stunned everyone.

“According to Charles, Claire Mercer knew.”

“And the real person behind it is still inside Ashbury.”
