Chapter 8 - The Unraveling

The click of the steel handcuffs locking around Vanessa Vance’s slender wrists echoed off the glass walls of the boardroom like a death knell.

"Get your hands off me!" Vanessa shrieked, thrashing wildly as two female FBI agents pinned her arms behind her back. "Do you know who I am?! Daddy! Tell them! Call the governor! Call him right now!"

Arthur Vance didn't say a word. He stood completely limp, his eyes glazed over in shock as an agent fastened handcuffs around his wrists. The silver-haired titan of Boston high society had aged twenty years in twenty minutes. His pinstripe suit looked loose on his shrinking frame.

As the agents pushed Vanessa toward the doors, she caught sight of Ethan standing tall by the window, completely untouchable.

"You ruined me, Ethan!" she screamed, her designer makeup smeared with black streaks of mascara, her voice cracking into hysterical rage. "You loved me! You were going to marry me! I was going to be the mistress of Caldwell Manor! You threw away everything we built for a worthless, whiny little brat who couldn't even stop crying for her dead mother!"

Ethan didn't flinch. He didn't even blink. He looked at her with an expression of cold, absolute disgust—the way a man looks at a venomous snake pinned beneath a boot.

"You were never going to be the mistress of anything, Vanessa," Ethan said, his voice razor-sharp and steady. "You were just a thief who forgot that houses have locks, and fathers have teeth."

The agents dragged Vanessa and Arthur out into the hallway.

Outside on the executive floor, every secretary, analyst, and junior partner stood in stunned silence, watching the disgraced duo being marched toward the freight elevator under heavy federal escort. Downstairs in the lobby, the live broadcast captured their perp walk in full, glorious 4K resolution, broadcasting their disgrace to fifty million screens worldwide.

Inside the boardroom, the remaining directors were gathered around Ethan.

"Ethan, the damage to our public market capitalization is already reversing," Thomas Sterling said, holding up a tablet displaying a surging green line. "The moment the press learned that the FBI arrested the Vances and that you’ve secured full control of the logistics patents, pre-market trading rebounded twelve percent. The market knows you cleaned house."

"I don't care about the stock price, Thomas," Ethan replied quietly, adjusting his cuffs. "Take over the chair for the rest of the morning session. Authorize Jonathan Hayes to file civil asset forfeiture against every single property owned by Vance Capital. I want their penthouses, their private jets, their offshore yachts, and their trust funds seized to establish a foundation for abused and neglected children in Massachusetts."

"Consider it done," Sterling said, nodding with deep respect.

Ethan turned to Martha Gable, who was sitting quietly on a sofa near the executive lounge, holding a warm cup of tea brought by Marcus.

"Martha," Ethan said, walking over and kneeling beside her, taking her weathered hands in his. "I have a car waiting downstairs to take you to a private clinic for a full medical checkup. After that, your old suite on the second floor of Caldwell Manor is being prepared. Your grandson’s legal status has been permanently secured through our corporate immigration attorneys—he received his permanent residency clearance twenty minutes ago."

Tears spilled over Martha’s wrinkled cheeks. "Oh, Ethan... you didn't have to do all that."

"You protected Lily when I wasn't there to do it myself," Ethan said, his voice thick with genuine emotion. "You are family, Martha. You will never have to worry about a single thing for the rest of your life."

"Take me to her, Ethan," Martha whispered, wiping her eyes. "Take me to my baby girl."

Ethan smiled for the first time in what felt like years. "Let's go home."
