Chapter 2: The Truth Behind the Lie

The courtroom doors closed.

But the nightmare had only begun.

The judge ordered everyone to remain seated.

“Mr. Carter, you will explain everything.”

Ethan stood silently.

For years, I thought I knew him.

I thought I knew his smile.

His habits.

His fears.

But the man standing before me felt like a stranger.

“I found out before Lily was born,” Ethan said.

“That she carried a dangerous secret.”

I looked at him in disbelief.

“She?”

He pointed toward Claire.

“No.”

Then he looked at the boy.

“Him.”

My eyes followed his gaze.

The little boy held my hand tighter.

“What does he mean?”

Ethan swallowed.

“Seven years ago, the hospital made a mistake.”

Claire’s expression changed.

“Don’t lie again.”

Ethan ignored her.

“Lily was not alone in the nursery.”

The room became colder.

“There was another baby.”

My breathing stopped.

“Another baby?”

Ethan nodded.

“A boy.”

Everyone stared at Noah.

The little boy who called me Mom.

“The hospital discovered that the babies had been switched during an emergency.”

Claire stepped forward.

“That’s not true.”

Ethan looked at her.

“You know it is.”

Claire became silent.

My head was spinning.

“Then who is this child?”

Ethan looked at Noah.

“His name is Noah.”

The boy looked down.

“And he is connected to Lily.”

My heart raced.

“Where is my daughter?”

Ethan didn’t answer.

That silence was worse than anything.

I grabbed his arm.

“Where is Lily?”

Finally, he whispered:

“She never left.”

A painful silence filled the courtroom.

“What?”

Ethan looked at me.

“Your daughter has been alive this entire time.”

I felt the world disappear.

“Where is she?”

Before he could answer…

The courtroom doors opened again.

A young woman stood there.

She looked terrified.

But her eyes…

Her eyes looked exactly like mine.

The same brown eyes.

The same small scar above the eyebrow.

The same expression I saw every morning in the mirror.

She whispered:

“Mom?”

My heart shattered.

Because I knew.

I knew before anyone spoke.

That was my daughter.

The baby I was told I lost.

The child I mourned.

The child they erased.

I slowly walked toward her.

Neither of us moved.

Then she whispered:

“I waited for you.”

And I collapsed into her arms.

For seven years…

May you like

She had been alive.

And I had been grieving a lie.
