Chapter 2: The Secret The Boy Carried

For the next twenty minutes, the world watched a miracle unfold.

Not on television.

Not in a movie.

Inside a dark airplane thousands of feet above the ocean.

Ethan communicated with air traffic control.

His voice was calm.

Too calm for someone his age.

"Tower, this is Flight 728. We have an emergency situation."

The controller hesitated.

Then answered.

"Flight 728, confirm pilot status."

Ethan looked at the unconscious captain.

Then at the storm ahead.

"Both pilots are unable to operate the aircraft."

A long silence followed.

Then the controller asked:

"Who is speaking?"

Ethan looked at the radio.

"My name is Ethan Carter."

Another pause.

"Captain Carter?"

Ethan's eyes changed.

"Yes."

The controller became quiet.

Everyone in the cockpit noticed.

"You knew my father?"

The voice on the radio softened.

"Your father saved my life twelve years ago."

Ethan said nothing.

The controller continued.

"He was the reason I became an air traffic controller."

Ethan looked down.

His father wasn't just remembered.

He was still helping people.

Even after he was gone.

But then the aircraft shook violently again.

Warning alarms appeared.

The storm had damaged one of the engines.

The flight attendant grabbed the seat.

"What happened?"

Ethan studied the instruments.

"We have engine instability."

Her face went pale.

"Can we land?"

Ethan didn't answer immediately.

Because the nearest airport was too far.

The storm was too strong.

And the damaged engine was getting worse.

The passengers began panicking again.

But Ethan remembered his father's words.

"When everything goes wrong, don't look at the problem."

"Look for the solution."

He adjusted the controls.

"Tower, I need an emergency landing route."

The controller replied.

"There is an abandoned military runway forty miles east. It's not designed for passenger aircraft."

Ethan looked at the map.

A dangerous option.

A nearly impossible option.

But the only option.

"Send me the coordinates."

The flight attendant looked at him.

"Ethan… you're only fourteen."

He looked at her.

"I know."

"You're scared, aren't you?"

For the first time…

His expression changed.

A small crack appeared.

"Yes."

She looked surprised.

"You are?"

Ethan nodded.

"I'm terrified."

The flight attendant softened.

"Then why do you look so calm?"

Ethan looked through the windshield.

Because behind those clouds...

He could almost hear his father's voice.

"Being brave doesn't mean you aren't afraid."

"It means someone needs you more than you need to be afraid."

Ethan took a deep breath.

Then pushed the aircraft forward.

The runway appeared through the storm.

But there was one problem.

The landing gear wouldn't fully open.

The cabin erupted into panic.

The impossible situation had become even worse.

The flight attendant looked at Ethan.

"What do we do now?"

Ethan stared at the runway below.

May you like

Then whispered:

"We land anyway."
