Chapter 10 - THE MAN BEHIND THE LEDGER
Agents raised their weapons.
Graham tightened his grip around Daniel’s shoulder.
The gun pressed harder against the older man’s neck.
“Lower them.”
Sloan did not move.
“You are surrounded.”
Graham smiled faintly.
“I am also standing inside a chamber containing enough unstable power cells to collapse the east wing.”
Marcus glanced toward the elevator controls.
Graham noticed.
“Do not test me.”
Sloan slowly lowered her weapon.
The agents followed.
Elena stared at her father.
Twelve years of grief stood less than twenty feet away.
He looked older than the man in every recording.
But his eyes were the same.
Gray.
Sharp.
Impossible to read.
“Are you hurt?” she asked.
Daniel smiled sadly.
“That is your first question?”
Her expression hardened.
“My first question was why you were alive.”
Daniel lowered his gaze.
“That answer is longer.”
Graham pushed him forward.
Eva moved behind Victoria instinctively.
Daniel saw her.
His face changed.
“Eva.”
She stared at him.
“You told them not to trust me.”
“I told them what Graham needed them to believe.”
“You recorded that message years ago.”
“Yes.”
“So you knew this would happen.”
“I knew some version of it would.”
Eva shook her head.
“You always know enough to make everyone else feel responsible.”
Daniel flinched.
Graham laughed softly.
“She learned that from you.”
Victoria stepped toward the elevator.
“Release him.”
Graham looked at her.
“You never stopped giving orders.”
“You never stopped confusing obedience with loyalty.”
His smile disappeared.
“You left me to clean up after Daniel for twenty-eight years.”
Victoria’s voice was cold.
“You enjoyed every second.”
“I survived every second.”
Graham’s eyes moved toward Elena.
“Now we finish.”
Julian stepped in front of her.
“No.”
Graham pointed the weapon toward him.
“You are the least important person in this room, Julian.”
Julian’s expression did not change.
“That has never stopped me from standing where I’m needed.”
Elena looked at him.
For the first time since the raid began, something warm moved through the pain between them.
Graham gestured toward the glass cradle.
“Elena enters.”
“No,” Daniel said.
Graham struck him with the gun.
Elena stepped forward instantly.
“Stop.”
Daniel staggered.
Blood appeared at the corner of his mouth.
Graham smiled.
“The child’s heartbeat completes the successor sequence.”
Elena looked at the cradle.
“What happens after that?”
“The ledger reconstructs.”
“And then?”
“I download it.”
“To where?”
“Everywhere I control.”
Sloan spoke.
“You will never leave the estate.”
“I do not need to.”
Graham looked toward the walls.
“Once the ledger reconstructs, my network activates automatically.”
Eva’s face tightened.
“What network?”
“The children.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
Victoria stared at him.
“What did you do?”
Graham answered.
“Daniel’s program trained biological keys. I improved it.”
Elena’s voice dropped.
“Into what?”
“People who could carry encrypted instructions without understanding them.”
Sloan looked horrified.
“You conditioned children to act as couriers?”
“Couriers. Witnesses. Access points.”
Graham smiled.
“Every government protects databases. No government knows how to protect itself from a frightened child carrying the right phrase.”
Eva whispered, “You used us.”
Graham looked at her.
“Daniel used you first.”
Daniel lifted his head.
“I tried to stop it.”
“After building the foundation.”
“I was wrong.”
“You were afraid.”
“I became human.”
Graham laughed.
“No. You became sentimental.”
Victoria’s gaze remained on Daniel.
“You let me believe Eva was dead.”
Daniel looked at her.
“I believed she would be safer away from you.”
“You had no right.”
“I had no good choice.”
“You always say that when you choose for everyone.”
Daniel absorbed the accusation.
He did not defend himself.
Elena stepped closer.
“Why did you choose me?”
Daniel looked at her.
“You were my daughter.”
“That is not an answer.”
“You were the only person I believed could dismantle what I created.”
“You made me believe you were murdered.”
“I needed your anger.”
The honesty cut through her.
“You built my life around revenge.”
“Yes.”
Julian looked at Daniel with disgust.
“You used her grief.”
“I did.”
“And you still call yourself her father?”
Daniel looked toward Elena’s belly.
“No.”
His voice broke.
“I lost that right.”
Graham shoved him toward the cradle.
“Enough confession.”
Daniel stumbled.
Elena moved to catch him.
Graham aimed the gun at her stomach.
Julian stepped between them.
The room froze.
Graham’s voice became quiet.
“Move.”
“No.”
“Elena will not die. I need the child alive.”
Julian looked at him.
“That does not make you safer.”
Graham’s finger tightened on the trigger.
Sloan spoke carefully.
“If you fire, your entire leverage disappears.”
Graham glanced at her.
“That depends where I fire.”
The gun shifted toward Julian’s chest.
Elena grabbed Julian’s arm.
“Move.”
“No.”
“Julian.”
“I’m not letting him aim at you.”
“You standing there gives him another target.”
“He already has one.”
Elena’s eyes filled.
“Please.”
The word changed him.
He stepped sideways, but remained close.
Graham pointed toward the cradle.
“Elena.”
Daniel shook his head.
“Do not enter.”
Graham struck him again.
Elena climbed into the glass cradle.
Sensors lowered around her.
Julian’s fists clenched.
Victoria stared at the control panel.
The screen showed Elena’s pulse.
Then the baby’s.
Graham entered a command.
“Successor sequence confirmed.”
The chamber lights dimmed.
A map appeared across the walls.
Thousands of points illuminated around the world.
Hospitals.
Schools.
Courthouses.
Ports.
Embassies.
Private homes.
Eva stared at the map.
“What are those?”
Daniel answered.
“Human nodes.”
Sloan’s face became grim.
“How many?”
“Four hundred and twelve active.”
Graham smiled.
“Four hundred and fourteen.”
He looked at Eva.
“Two are in this room.”
Eva backed away.
The bracelet on her wrist began glowing again.
A second light appeared beneath Elena’s cradle.
Daniel struggled against Graham.
“You promised the others would be released.”
“I promised they would no longer be confined.”
“That is not the same thing.”
“No.”
Graham’s smile widened.
“It is better.”
He pressed a command.
Across the map, dozens of points turned red.
Sloan’s radio erupted with voices.
Reports arrived from multiple locations.
A courthouse evacuation in Boston.
A hospital security breach in Baltimore.
A young boy repeating an unknown code inside a federal building.
A teenage girl attempting to enter a restricted port facility.
The human nodes were activating.
Elena looked at her father.
“Stop them.”
Daniel’s face was pale.
“I cannot.”
“You built the system.”
“He changed the activation layer.”
Graham leaned close to the cradle.
“The successor can override them.”
“How?”
“By completing reconstruction.”
Elena looked at the map.
“If I unlock the ledger, I control the nodes?”
“For seven minutes.”
“And after that?”
“I do.”
Julian shouted, “Don’t believe him.”
Graham smiled.
“She doesn’t need to believe me.”
He pressed another command.
One red point began blinking rapidly.
A live security feed appeared.
A little girl stood inside a train station.
She could not have been older than six.
A black backpack rested against her chest.
A timer glowed on a device inside it.
Elena stared.
“No.”
Graham’s expression was calm.
“Complete the sequence.”
Sloan’s voice became deadly.
“What is in that bag?”
“Enough to ensure cooperation.”
Elena closed her eyes.
Julian moved toward Graham.
Agents raised their weapons again.
Graham pressed the gun against Daniel’s skull.
“Do not.”
Elena looked at the child on-screen.
Thirty seconds.
She placed both hands against the cradle sensors.
“Tell me what to do.”
Daniel shouted, “Elena, no!”
She looked at him.
“There is a child.”
“It is a false feed.”
Graham’s expression changed.
Elena stared at her father.
“How do you know?”
Daniel’s eyes locked onto hers.
“Because the train station closed six years ago.”
Graham fired.
The gunshot filled the nursery.
Daniel collapsed.
Elena screamed.
Julian lunged.
Marcus and Sloan moved at the same instant.
Graham fired again.
The bullet struck the cradle glass.
Cracks spread across it.
Victoria grabbed the diamond necklace and drove its hidden needle into the control panel.
