Chapter 14 - WHAT THE DEAD LEAVE BEHIND

Daniel ran.

Three officers tackled him before he reached the perimeter.

“My mother!”

“Stay down!”

“She’s been shot!”

“She moved!” someone shouted.

On the monitor, Margaret rolled behind a concrete barrier.

The bullet had struck her shoulder.

Still alive.

Thomas fired toward police positions.

Officers returned fire.

Vivian stared at the screen.

“That tunnel.”

Detective Alvarez turned.

“What?”

“There’s an old storm tunnel beneath the farmhouse.”

“Where does it exit?”

“Near the west fence.”

Alvarez grabbed the radio.

“Units to west perimeter.”

Vivian shook her head.

“He knows they’ll think west.”

“Then where?”

“There’s a second exit.”

“You just said west.”

“My father built another one himself.”

She pointed to the map.

“South creek bed.”

Police moved.

Thomas disappeared into the farmhouse.

Margaret lay exposed.

Daniel watched helplessly.

Then another figure appeared on the tactical camera.

Marcus Reed.

Daniel stared.

“What the hell?”

Marcus crossed the field with his hands raised.

Thomas emerged from the house and aimed at him.

Marcus shouted, “It’s over!”

Thomas laughed.

“You’re the reason it’s over!”

“I told them everything!”

“You coward.”

“Yes!”

Marcus kept walking.

“I’m a coward.”

Daniel stared at the monitor.

Marcus continued.

“I took your money. I forged signatures. I lied to my best friend.”

His voice cracked.

“But Emily was never supposed to die.”

Thomas raised the gun.

“You sent Daniel home.”

“Yes.”

“You ruined everything.”

“Yes.”

Thomas fired.

Marcus dropped.

Daniel shouted.

Police opened fire.

Thomas disappeared again.

“Medic team!”

Officers rushed toward Marcus and Margaret.

Alvarez received a radio message.

“Suspect moving south.”

Vivian closed her eyes.

“I can reach the creek faster.”

“No,” Emily said.

Vivian looked at her.

“You’ve done enough.”

“I know.”

“Then stop.”

Vivian stared.

Emily’s voice sharpened.

“Running toward danger doesn’t undo what you did to me.”

Vivian swallowed.

“What does?”

“Nothing.”

That answer hit harder.

Emily continued.

“You don’t get to erase it.”

Vivian looked down.

“You live with it.”

Emily’s eyes were hard.

“And then you decide what kind of person lives with it.”

Vivian nodded slowly.

Police found Thomas ten minutes later near the creek.

He had nowhere left to run.

Daniel, Emily and Vivian watched through a drone feed as officers surrounded him.

“Drop the weapon!”

Thomas stood ankle-deep in muddy water.

He looked upward, almost as if he could see the camera.

Then he laughed.

He placed the gun under his chin.

Vivian gasped.

“No.”

Emily grabbed her wrist.

Thomas closed his eyes.

Vivian whispered, “Dad…”

But before he could pull the trigger, a less-lethal round struck his arm.

The gun dropped into the creek.

Officers rushed him.

He fought.

They forced him facedown into the mud and cuffed him.

Alive.

Vivian broke down.

Not because she wanted him free.

Because for twenty-two years she had believed her father was a victim.

Now she finally saw him for what he was.

A wounded man who had chosen to make wounds in everyone else.

Paramedics reached Margaret.

She survived.

Marcus was less fortunate.

The bullet had entered beneath his ribs.

At the hospital, Daniel sat beside him.

Marcus opened his eyes.

“You look terrible.”

Daniel almost laughed.

“So do you.”

Marcus coughed.

“I’m going to prison.”

“If you survive.”

“Optimistic.”

Daniel stared at his former best friend.

“Why?”

Marcus closed his eyes.

“Debt. Fear. Greed.”

“That simple?”

“Most terrible things are.”

Daniel looked away.

Marcus whispered, “I’m sorry about Emily.”

Daniel said nothing.

“And Noah.”

Nothing.

“And your daughter.”

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“You don’t get forgiveness from me.”

Marcus nodded.

“I know.”

“But tell the truth.”

“I will.”

“All of it.”

“Yes.”

Daniel stood.

Marcus called after him.

“Daniel?”

He turned.

“Your father knew.”

“Knew what?”

“That Thomas was alive.”

Daniel froze.

Marcus took a painful breath.

“Richard spent years paying him to stay gone.”

Daniel stared.

“And when Richard stopped paying?”

Marcus’s eyes closed.

May you like

“Richard died three weeks later.”
