Chapter 2: The Recording That Changed Everything
An hour later, Leo was resting in a private observation room.
His throat had been treated.
His pain was controlled.
But the question remained.
Who hurt him?
I sat at my desk reviewing the security footage from the hospital entrance.
Something about Victoria bothered me.
Not just her attitude.
Her timing.
Her story.
Everything.
The footage loaded.
There she was.
Victoria entering the hospital.
Holding Leo’s hand.
At first glance, she looked like any worried guardian.
Until I slowed the video.
Leo wasn’t walking beside her.
He was pulling away.
His small body was resisting.
Victoria tightened her grip.
Then the camera captured something.
A small movement.
She leaned down.
And whispered something into his ear.
I increased the volume.
The audio was unclear.
But after cleaning the recording, one sentence became understandable.
“Remember what happens if you tell anyone.”
My entire body went still.
I replayed it.
Again.
And again.
The door behind me opened.
Nurse Brenda walked in.
“Doctor?”
I turned the monitor toward her.
Her face changed immediately.
“Oh my God.”
“We need to protect Leo.”
Before Brenda could answer, the hospital administrator entered.
“Doctor Vale.”
Behind him stood two detectives.
Victoria had already called someone.
Of course she had.
People like her always moved first.
“She claims you are harassing her,” the administrator said.
I looked at him.
“She injured a five-year-old child.”
The detective stepped forward.
“Do you have proof?”
I pointed at the screen.
“Yes.”
The room went silent.
The detective watched the footage.
His expression slowly changed.
Then another voice came from the hallway.
“Delete that video.”
Everyone turned.
Victoria stood there.
But this time…
Her confidence was gone.
The detective looked at her.
“Mrs. Vance.”
She forced a smile.
“That footage is private property.”
“No.”
The detective calmly replied.
“It’s hospital security footage.”
