Chapter 13 — The Man Everyone Buried

“A buyer with enough money to purchase your empire before sunrise.”

“Who?” Ethan demanded.

Adrian looked toward Daniel.

“Victor Ashford.”

For one second, nobody moved.

Then Daniel crossed the basement and seized the laptop from the table.

The transaction page remained open.

BLACK CROWN CONTINGENCY SUCCESSION ACTIVATED.

AUTHORIZED TRUSTEE: NOAH J. ASHFORD.

DEBT PURCHASER: VICTOR ASHFORD GLOBAL TRUST.

TRANSFER STATUS: PENDING FINAL CLEARANCE.

Daniel stared at the screen.

“My father cannot control that trust from a hospital bed.”

Adrian smiled from the floor while Agent Cole tightened the restraints around his wrists.

“He does not need to.”

Daniel turned.

“What does that mean?”

“Victor built systems that outlived his freedom.”

Daniel searched through the linked documents.

There were automated instructions, proxy signatures, offshore custodians, and pre-approved acquisition orders.

Victor had prepared for arrest.

For scandal.

Even for betrayal.

If the transfer cleared, Ashford International’s largest block of private debt would belong to a trust legally controlled by Daniel’s father.

Victor could force repayment.

Demand assets.

Replace management.

Or break the company apart.

Ethan looked at Noah.

“Can you reverse the authorization?”

Noah’s face remained pale.

“I never gave it.”

“But the system recognized you.”

“I did not ask it to.”

“Can you revoke it?”

“I don’t know.”

Jonathan moved toward the computer.

“Black Crown requires a cooling period for succession transfers.”

Daniel checked the legal code.

“Six hours.”

Ethan looked at the time.

2:14 a.m.

The transfer would clear at 8:14.

Sophia was still in the city.

Eleanor and Victor were hospitalized under guard.

Lydia was in federal custody.

Adrian had finally been captured.

Yet the empire was still moving toward Victor.

Even imprisoned men could rule through documents.

Ethan turned toward Cole.

“Get Victor on a secure line.”

“He is under sedation.”

“Wake him.”

“He underwent surgery.”

“Then speak to his attorneys.”

Daniel shook his head.

“They will deny everything.”

Ethan looked at him.

“Then we do not ask.”

Daniel understood.

“We freeze the offshore trust.”

Cole’s expression tightened.

“That requires a court order.”

“We have kidnapping, attempted murder, fraud, explosives, obstruction, and conspiracy.”

“And still need a judge.”

Jonathan looked at the transaction timestamp.

“Victor structured the trust through multiple jurisdictions. A domestic freeze may not arrive in time.”

Sophia’s voice came through Ethan’s phone.

“Then do not freeze the buyer.”

Everyone turned.

Ethan had called her before entering Rosewood House and left the connection open.

“Sophia?”

“I heard everything.”

“You should not be on this call.”

“And you should stop saying that every time I understand the problem before you do.”

Despite the situation, Noah glanced at Ethan.

Ethan ignored him.

“What are you thinking?” Ethan asked.

Sophia answered.

“Victor is buying Ashford debt.”

“Yes.”

“Debt only has power if the company cannot repay or refinance it.”

Daniel looked at the screen.

“She is right.”

Ethan frowned.

“We cannot refinance billions before morning.”

“No,” Sophia said. “But Black Crown can purchase the debt first.”

Jonathan looked up.

“It cannot bid against its own succession transfer.”

“Why not?”

“Because the system requires joint heir approval for transactions over one billion dollars.”

Sophia paused.

“Ethan and I can approve.”

Jonathan looked at Noah.

“Not anymore.”

The room became silent.

With Noah activated as the third heir, Black Crown now required two of three trustees for emergency transactions.

Ethan understood.

“We only need one more vote.”

Everyone looked at Noah.

He stared back.

Adrian laughed softly.

“There it is.”

Noah turned toward him.

“What?”

“The moment they need you, they call you family.”

Ethan looked at Noah.

“I am not asking you to trust me.”

“No?”

“I am asking you to stop the man who used your face to hand the company to Victor.”

Adrian leaned back against the wall.

“They will discard you when this is done.”

Noah’s jaw tightened.

“You raised me.”

“Yes.”

“You said I was your son.”

“You are.”

“You used my identity without telling me.”

“To secure what should be yours.”

“You secured it for Victor.”

Adrian’s expression changed slightly.

Noah saw it.

“So Ethan was right.”

Adrian remained silent.

“You never intended to give me control.”

“I intended to clear the path.”

“For yourself.”

“For both of us.”

“No.”

Noah stepped closer.

“You wanted me angry enough to obey.”

The words struck Adrian harder than any blow.

Margaret watched Noah from the table.

“You are not what he made you believe.”

Noah looked at her.

“You hid me.”

“I protected you.”

He laughed bitterly.

“There is that word again.”

Margaret’s eyes filled.

“I should have fought harder.”

Jonathan lowered his head.

“So should I.”

Noah looked between them.

Every older person in the room carried regret.

Every younger person carried the damage.

Ethan stepped toward Noah.

“Help us stop Victor.”

“And then?”

“You choose what happens next.”

“You expect me to believe that?”

“No.”

Ethan’s voice remained steady.

“I expect you to watch whether I keep my word.”

Noah stared at him.

Then he looked at the transaction.

“How do I vote?”

Jonathan entered the Black Crown emergency portal.

Three trustee names appeared.

ETHAN ASHFORD.

SOPHIA VALE ASHFORD.

NOAH JONATHAN CROSS-ASHFORD.

Noah flinched at the combined surname.

Ethan noticed.

“You can change it later.”

Noah looked at him.

“Is that supposed to comfort me?”

“No.”

It almost made Noah smile.

Almost.

Jonathan opened the counterpurchase option.

Black Crown could acquire the Victor trust’s pending debt claim by using Vale reserves, protected cash, and liquidated luxury assets.

The price would be enormous.

One point six billion dollars.

Sophia’s inheritance would be placed at risk.

Ethan spoke into the phone.

“Sophia, this uses Vale money.”

“My father hid that money to expose the people who destroyed him.”

“It belongs to you.”

“It belongs to the truth.”

“If the company collapses anyway, you lose it.”

“Then make sure it does not collapse.”

Ethan closed his eyes.

She trusted him with the last thing her father left.

No one in his family had trusted without trying to control.

“I vote yes,” Sophia said.

Her authorization appeared.

TRUSTEE ONE APPROVED.

Ethan placed his hand on the scanner.

“I vote yes.”

TRUSTEE TWO APPROVED.

The system paused.

EMERGENCY COUNTERPURCHASE INITIATED.

Noah looked at the screen.

“You did not need me.”

Jonathan frowned.

“We thought—”

The system updated.

THIRD TRUSTEE REVIEW REQUIRED DUE TO CONFLICTED SUCCESSION.

Noah gave Ethan a cold look.

“You did need me.”

“Yes.”

“At least you admit it.”

The vote appeared.

APPROVE.

REJECT.

Noah’s finger hovered over the screen.

Adrian spoke from behind him.

“If you approve, you save the empire that erased you.”

Noah looked at Ethan.

“If I reject?”

“Victor takes control.”

“And if I approve?”

“We gain time to decide what the company becomes.”

“We?”

“Yes.”

“You include me now?”

“You are already included.”

Noah looked toward Jonathan.

Then Margaret.

Then Adrian.

Finally, he pressed APPROVE.

The screen changed.

COUNTERPURCHASE ACCEPTED.

VICTOR ASHFORD GLOBAL TRUST TRANSFER BLOCKED.

For the first time that night, Adrian’s composure broke.

“You fool.”

Noah turned.

“No.”

His voice was quiet.

“I finally made a decision you did not choose.”

At Ashford Medical Center, Victor woke to the sound of his legal adviser shouting.

“The transfer failed.”

Victor’s eyes opened slowly.

His chest and shoulder were wrapped in bandages.

Two federal officers stood outside the glass door.

“What failed?”

“The debt acquisition.”

Victor tried to sit.

Pain drove him back.

“How?”

“Black Crown counterpurchased.”

“Ethan and Sophia cannot authorize alone.”

“They did not.”

Victor stared at him.

The adviser swallowed.

“Noah Cross was recognized as the third trustee.”

Victor’s face changed.

“Noah is alive.”

“Yes.”

“And he voted with Ethan.”

Victor closed his eyes.

For decades, Victor had treated bloodlines as tools.

Now a hidden child had destroyed his final escape.

His adviser placed another document beside the bed.

“There is more.”

“What?”

“The Black Crown counterpurchase triggered automatic disclosure.”

Victor’s eyes opened.

“Disclosure of what?”

“Every debt acquisition connected to your trust.”

Victor stared.

The offshore network.

The shell companies.

The stolen Vale reserves.

The illegal transfers.

All of it was being sent to federal investigators.

His breathing became faster.

“Stop it.”

“We cannot.”

“Call Mercer.”

“In custody.”

“Marcus.”

“Detained.”

“Lucinda.”

“Arrested.”

Victor looked toward the door.

For the first time in his life, there was no one left to sacrifice.

Then Eleanor entered in a wheelchair under federal guard.

Her shoulder was bandaged.

Her face was pale.

Victor looked at her with hatred.

“You shot me.”

“You aimed at Daniel.”

“You cared about him?”

“I cared that you did not get to kill another Ashford.”

Victor laughed.

“You still believe the name matters.”

Eleanor looked at the legal documents.

“What happened?”

“Noah.”

Her face froze.

Victor saw it.

“You knew he lived.”

She said nothing.

“You knew.”

“I believed Adrian took him abroad.”

“And you never searched?”

Eleanor’s jaw tightened.

“He was Adrian’s son.”

“He was yours.”

“He was a liability.”

Victor stared at her.

Even he seemed disgusted.

“You pushed Sophia from a balcony to protect an unborn heir while abandoning your own child.”

Eleanor’s eyes hardened.

“Noah threatened Ethan’s legitimacy.”

“There was no legitimacy left to protect.”

Victor laughed again.

Then pain stopped him.

Eleanor looked toward the city beyond the window.

“Ethan will not keep control.”

“No.”

Victor smiled faintly.

“But neither will you.”

She looked at him.

Victor’s expression became cruel.

“You built everything for one son.”

“And?”

“The hidden one just saved the empire from you.”

Eleanor’s face emptied.

For the first time, the punishment reached somewhere prison could not.

The son she chose to erase had become essential.

May you like

The son she chose to control had turned against her.

And the family name she murdered to protect was leaving her hands.
