Chapter 3 — The Truth No One Could Hide

That night, Daniel couldn't sleep.

Something wasn't right.

His mother had always protected everyone else's feelings.

Especially his.

After Olivia and the children went upstairs, Daniel quietly entered the kitchen.

He found Margaret washing dishes.

"You don't have to do that."

She smiled.

"It's my way of helping."

He gently took the plate from her hands.

"No."

"You've helped enough."

For several long moments, neither of them spoke.

Finally, Margaret whispered,

"I didn't want you to worry while you were overseas."

Daniel felt his stomach tighten.

"Tell me everything."

She looked out the window.

"When you left, Olivia said the house needed rules."

"I wasn't allowed to eat at the table because I 'made dinner uncomfortable.'"

"I wasn't allowed to watch television with the children."

"My room was moved to the old storage room."

"If guests visited..."

"I had to stay upstairs."

Daniel closed his eyes.

Every sentence felt heavier than the last.

"And the bruises?"

Margaret hesitated.

"I slipped while carrying laundry."

Before Daniel could respond, Ethan appeared quietly in the hallway.

"Dad..."

Daniel turned.

The boy was crying.

"I saw Mommy push Grandma."

The words echoed through the house.

"I wanted to help..."

"But Mommy said if I told you, our family would break apart."

Daniel hugged his son tightly.

"No, buddy."

"Our family broke apart the day someone forgot how to treat another person with kindness."

The next morning, Daniel asked Olivia to sit down.

"I've already spoken to Ethan."

Her face turned pale.

She knew.

There was no escaping the truth anymore.
