Chapter 9 - THE MAN WHO SURRENDERED

Boston had never seen Renick Kavanaugh surrender.

Television helicopters circled overhead.

Reporters shouted behind police barriers.

Renick walked down his driveway alone.

Belle watched from inside.

Brinley held her hand.

Federal agents cuffed him.

Before entering the vehicle, Renick turned.

His eyes found his daughter.

Then Belle.

He nodded once.

Three hours later, Daniel’s files reached six different news organizations.

Renick had planned ahead.

Patrick could corrupt an investigator.

A detective.

Maybe even a judge.

He could not silence everyone.

The files exploded across the city.

Financial records linked Patrick to Harrow.

Old surveillance photographs showed him alive years after his supposed funeral.

Daniel’s notes were authenticated.

Declan agreed to testify.

Sully agreed too.

Then one more witness appeared.

Marissa Cole.

Police found her hiding in Providence.

She confessed.

Patrick had paid her.

But she insisted Brinley was never supposed to fall.

“I was supposed to catch her.”

Marissa cried during interrogation.

“Mr. Kavanaugh was supposed to believe his security was failing.”

“Why?”

“To isolate him.”

Patrick wanted Renick suspicious of everyone.

He wanted his son alone.

Then he planned to take back the Kavanaugh empire.

Marissa also admitted something else.

She had not sent the threat to Micah.

Patrick had.

Because Patrick recognized Daniel’s son.

He had been watching Belle for months.

Belle listened to the recorded confession with clenched fists.

Daniel’s death had never truly ended.

Patrick had simply waited to see whether Daniel left evidence with his family.

Micah’s accidental involvement with Brinley had forced him to act.

Renick was released temporarily into federal protective custody after agreeing to cooperate.

He returned to see Brinley.

She ran into him.

This time he knelt before she reached him.

Belle noticed that.

He was learning.

Later, Renick found Belle on the porch.

“You told me to surrender.”

“You listened.”

“I rarely do that.”

“I noticed.”

He smiled.

A real smile this time.

Then it disappeared.

“I may go to prison.”

Belle looked at him.

“For what?”

“For things I did before this.”

She appreciated that he did not pretend innocence.

“How long?”

“I don’t know.”

Belle nodded.

Renick looked through the window at Brinley and Micah playing cards.

“I deserve whatever comes.”

“Maybe.”

He looked at her.

“But she doesn’t deserve to lose you.”

Renick swallowed.

“No.”

Belle turned toward him.

“Then give her something worth waiting for.”

Before he could answer, Sully rushed outside.

“Patrick surfaced.”

Renick stood.

“Where?”

Sully held up his phone.

“Brinley’s school.”

Renick’s face went white.

But Brinley was inside the house.

Belle frowned.

“Why would he go there?”

Then Micah appeared at the door.

“Mom?”

He was holding Brinley’s backpack.

Something inside it was beeping.

Sully tore it open.

A small tracking device was sewn into the lining.

Patrick had not gone to Brinley’s school looking for her.

He had gone there to plant something.

Renick grabbed his coat.

“What?”

Belle asked.

Renick looked at the school map on Sully’s phone.

“An insurance policy.”

May you like

Seconds later, the school’s fire alarm activated.

And beneath the gymnasium, police discovered enough explosives to level half the building.
