Chapter 3: The Voice That Saved Her
Emily's instincts screamed louder than the crashing waves.
She didn't move.
Ryan's smile disappeared.
"Don't make this difficult."
"I loved you," Emily whispered.
"I know."
His answer came without emotion.
"And that's exactly why you never questioned anything."
He reached for her arm.
At that exact moment—
A loud voice echoed across the cliffs.
"Emily!"
Ryan froze.
Both of them turned.
An older couple had just climbed onto the overlook carrying binoculars and backpacks.
Behind them, a park ranger stepped out of his truck.
He waved toward the cliff.
"Everything alright over there?"
Emily didn't hesitate.
"No!"
Her scream shattered the silence.
"Help me!"
Ryan lunged toward her.
Emily twisted away just as his hand grabbed empty air.
The ranger immediately broke into a sprint.
"So did the older man.
Ryan looked from Emily...
to the ranger...
to the tourists already pulling out their phones.
His perfect plan was collapsing.
Without another word, he turned and ran toward the parking lot.
The ranger chased him while Emily collapsed onto the rocky ground, shaking uncontrollably.
Within minutes, police vehicles screamed up the coastal road.
Ryan was arrested less than two miles away after crashing his SUV into a roadside barrier while trying to escape.
Emily sat wrapped in a rescue blanket, unable to stop trembling.
