Chapter 1: The Truth They Tried to Hide

The ambulance doors slammed shut before anyone in my family could stop them.
I watched Noah disappear behind the flashing red lights, his small body surrounded by strangers who cared more about saving him than the people who were supposed to love him.
That thought hurt more than anything.
My own family had watched my son struggle for air.
And they had tried to silence me.
I followed the ambulance to the hospital with one thought repeating in my mind:
What if I had listened to them?
What if I had believed my mother?
What if I had waited?
What if Noah never opened his eyes again?
Those questions haunted me as I sat in the emergency room hallway, my hands shaking.
A nurse finally walked toward me.
“Are you Noah’s mother?”
I stood immediately.
“Yes. How is he?”
She looked at me carefully.
“He’s stable now. He had severe bruising around his ribs and signs of restricted breathing. Another few minutes without help could have made things much worse.”
My knees almost gave out.
Another few minutes.
That was all.
My mother wanted me to wait another few minutes.
My father wanted me to calm down.
Lauren wanted me to protect Chase.
Nobody wanted to protect Noah.
The doctor came out shortly after.
“He’s lucky,” he said.
Lucky.
I hated that word.
My son wasn’t lucky.
My son was eight years old and had to survive something he never should have experienced.
When I entered his room, Noah opened his eyes slowly.
“Mom?”
I rushed to his side.
“I’m here.”
His tiny fingers grabbed mine.
“Am I in trouble?”
The question broke me.
“No, baby. Why would you think that?”
He looked away.
“Grandma was mad.”
I froze.
“What did Grandma say?”
Noah swallowed.
“She said not everything needs to become a big problem.”
My heart sank.
Then he whispered:
“She told me not to tell anyone Chase pushed me.”
The room went silent.
Not everything needs to become a big problem.
That was what they thought.
That my son’s pain was an inconvenience.
I kissed Noah’s forehead.
“Listen to me. You did nothing wrong.”
For the first time that day, my son looked like he believed me.
But I knew something.
This wasn’t over.
Because my family had not only hurt Noah.

They had tried to cover it up.
And I was going to find out why.
