CHAPTER 2: The Secret Behind Meredith’s Anger

Claire spent three days in the hospital.

The burns on her legs required treatment, but the physical pain wasn’t the hardest part.

The hardest part was remembering everyone’s faces.

Not Meredith’s.

Everyone else’s.

The people who saw.

The people who knew.

The people who stayed silent.

Daniel came every day.

Flowers.

Coffee.

Apologies.

But Claire barely spoke to him.

On the fourth day, Daniel finally sat beside her hospital bed.

“I know you don’t want to hear this,” he whispered.

Claire looked out the window.

“Then why are you here?”

Daniel swallowed.

“Because I need to tell you the truth.”

She turned toward him.

“What truth?”

He looked broken.

“Meredith has always been jealous of you.”

Claire said nothing.

Daniel continued.

“When I married you, she thought I was abandoning my family.”

“She told me I was changing. That you were taking me away.”

Claire laughed softly.

“Your sister pushed me because she was jealous?”

“No.”

Daniel shook his head.

“She pushed you because she believed she owned me.”

The room became quiet.

Then Daniel revealed something Claire never expected.

“Two months before Christmas, Meredith found out something.”

“What?”

“She found out our parents were planning to sell the family house.”

Claire frowned.

“What does that have to do with me?”

Daniel looked down.

“She blamed you.”

“Why?”

“Because she believed if I had never married you, I would have stayed close enough to save the family.”

Claire stared at him.

“She thought hurting me would bring you back?”

Daniel nodded.

“She was wrong.”

Later that afternoon, Detective Harris visited Claire.

“We found more evidence.”

Claire sat up.

“What kind?”

The detective placed a folder on the table.

“Messages.”

Inside were screenshots.

Hundreds of messages between Meredith and Evelyn.

Claire’s heart sank.

They weren’t just discussing the accident.

They had been discussing Claire for months.

One message from Meredith read:

“She needs to understand she doesn’t belong here.”

Another said:

“Daniel will eventually choose us.”

Claire felt sick.

This wasn’t one angry moment.

This was planned.

The detective looked serious.

“Your sister-in-law didn’t lose control that night.”

“She made a decision.”

Claire looked at the messages.

Then she whispered:

“She wanted me gone.”

The detective nodded.

“Yes.”

That night, Claire made her own decision.

She wasn’t going to run.

She wasn’t going to hide.

She was going to make sure the Whitmore family faced everything they had buried.
