Chapter 13 - THE MAID MARGARET NEVER SAW

Sirens grew louder above them.
Margaret stared at Emma.
“No.”
Emma said nothing.
Margaret looked toward Hayes.
“You called them.”
Hayes shook his head.
“No.”
Margaret turned toward Richard.
He laughed.
“Not me.”
Then Charles began laughing.
Weakly.
Painfully.
But genuinely.
Margaret stared at her husband.
“What is funny?”
Charles looked at her.
“You.”
Margaret’s face hardened.
Charles continued.
“For forty years, you memorized every powerful person who entered our house.”
“Senators.”
“Judges.”
“Bankers.”
“Investors.”
“You knew their wives.”
“Their children.”
“Their weaknesses.”
He smiled.
“But you never learned the maid’s last name.”
Margaret’s jaw tightened.
Charles looked at Emma.
“Alvarez.”
Emma nodded.
“Rosa Alvarez.”
Charles looked back at Margaret.
“The woman you treated like furniture just ended you.”
Margaret raised the pistol toward him.
Nathan moved.
“Mom!”
Richard aimed at Margaret.
Hayes moved too.
For one second, every weapon in the room shifted.
Emma shouted.
“STOP!”
Everyone froze.
Emma looked at Margaret.
“Listen.”
Boots could now be heard above.
Many.
Not local patrol officers.
A loudspeaker echoed faintly through the underground ventilation system.
“Federal agents!”
Margaret’s face became white.
“Drop all weapons and remain where you are!”
Hayes slowly placed his gun on the floor.
Rebecca hesitated.
Emma looked at her.
“Mom.”
Rebecca lowered hers.
Richard did the same.
Margaret did not.
Nathan stared at her.
“It’s over.”
Margaret looked at him.
“No.”
“Yes.”
“No.”
Her breathing became faster.
“This family exists because of me.”
Nathan shook his head.
“This family survived despite you.”
Margaret looked toward Evelyn.
“You think they will forgive you?”
Evelyn’s face crumpled.
Margaret continued.
“You pushed a pregnant woman down a staircase.”
“You lied to police.”
“You helped move money.”
“You think Emma is going to save you?”
Evelyn looked at Emma.
Emma did not lie.
“No.”
Evelyn’s face fell.
Emma continued.
“I’m not saving you from consequences.”
Margaret smiled.
Then Emma added.
“But consequences are not the same as destruction.”
Evelyn looked at her.
Emma continued.
“You tell the truth.”
“All of it.”
“You accept what you did.”
“And then you live with what comes next.”
Margaret laughed.
“How noble.”
Emma looked at her.
“No.”
“Just different from you.”
A heavy pounding came from the archive door.
“FEDERAL AGENTS!”
Margaret raised her pistol.
Hayes shouted.
“Don’t!”
She pointed it toward the door.
“Margaret!”
Nathan moved toward her.
She swung the weapon toward him.
Emma’s heart stopped.
“Nathan!”
Margaret stared at her son.
He stared back.
“Put it down.”
Her hand shook.
“You chose her.”
Nathan’s face tightened.
“This was never supposed to be a choice.”
“You chose her over your family.”
“She is my family.”
Margaret’s eyes filled with tears.
For the first time all night, they looked real.
Emma almost felt pity.
Almost.
Margaret whispered.
“I gave you everything.”
Nathan shook his head.
“No.”
“You gave me what you wanted me to have.”
“There’s a difference.”
Margaret’s finger tightened.
Rebecca moved.
Richard shouted.
The archive door burst open.
Armed federal agents flooded the corridor.
“DROP THE WEAPON!”
Margaret spun.
Three rifles aimed at her.
“DROP IT!”
She looked around.
No exit.
No ally.
No control.
Then she looked at Emma.
Hatred filled her face.
“This is your fault.”
Emma stared back.
“No.”
Margaret’s hand trembled.
“You destroyed my family.”
Emma shook her head.
“You did.”
Margaret raised the gun.
Nathan lunged.
Richard moved faster.
He struck Margaret’s wrist.
The pistol fired.
The bullet hit the ceiling.
Agents rushed forward.
Margaret screamed.
Richard forced her arm down.
Two agents tackled them both.
The gun slid across the floor.
Nathan kicked it away.
Margaret fought wildly.
“GET OFF ME!”
Agents pinned her.
“Hands behind your back!”
“You have no idea who I am!”
One agent pulled her wrist behind her.
Margaret screamed.
“I KNOW THE GOVERNOR!”
The agent cuffed her.
“Good for you.”
Evelyn stared.
For perhaps the first time in her life, her mother’s name meant nothing.
Margaret looked toward Charles.
“You!”
Charles remained trapped in the chair.
She shouted.
“Tell them!”
Charles stared at her.
Margaret continued.
“Tell them who we are!”
Charles’s expression became strangely peaceful.
“I think they know.”
Margaret stopped fighting.
Agents pulled her upright.
Her eyes found Emma.
“This is not finished.”
Emma looked at her.
“Yes.”
“It is.”
Margaret was taken into the corridor.
Her voice faded.
Then Emma turned toward Charles.
The explosive remained beneath his chair.
A bomb technician entered.
“Everyone out.”
Nathan immediately shook his head.
“I’m staying.”
“No.”
“That’s my father.”
The technician looked at Charles.
Charles spoke.
“Get them out.”
Nathan stared.
“Dad.”
“Nathan.”
Charles looked at him.
For years, their relationship had been formal.
Polite.
Controlled.
Charles had taught Nathan business.
Discipline.
Responsibility.
But never vulnerability.
Now Charles looked frightened.
“I need you to go.”
Nathan’s eyes filled.
“No.”
Charles smiled weakly.
“I spent most of your life telling you what kind of man to be.”
Nathan said nothing.
Charles continued.
“I was wrong about most of it.”
Nathan’s jaw trembled.
“Dad.”
Charles looked toward Emma.
“Take care of her.”
Emma’s face hardened.
“No.”
Charles looked surprised.
Emma stepped closer.
“You don’t get to make Nathan responsible for taking care of me.”
Nathan almost laughed through his tears.
Emma continued.
“And you don’t get to turn this into a goodbye because it sounds dramatic.”
The bomb technician looked at her.
“Ma’am.”
Emma pointed toward Charles.
“You are getting him out of that chair.”
The technician nodded.
“That’s the plan.”
“Good.”
Emma looked at Charles.
“So stop acting dead.”
Charles stared at her.
Then laughed.
A real laugh.
Perhaps the first one Emma had ever heard from him.
The technician ordered everyone back.
Nathan reluctantly followed Emma.
Rebecca stayed beside her.
Hayes was taken upstairs for medical treatment and questioning.
Richard was placed in handcuffs.
He did not resist.
Before agents led him away, Nathan stopped him.
“Why did you help us?”
Richard looked at him.
“Don’t make me better than I am.”
Nathan waited.
Richard continued.
“I helped Margaret destroy Rebecca.”
“I helped steal the company.”
“I lived comfortably while other people suffered.”
He looked toward the archive room.
“I didn’t save you.”
“I just finally stopped helping her.”
Nathan nodded.
Richard was taken away.
Ten minutes passed.
Then twenty.
Emma sat against the corridor wall.
Rebecca sat several feet away.
Neither spoke.
Nathan paced.
Evelyn cried quietly.
Then the bomb technician emerged.
Nathan rushed toward him.
“My father?”
The man removed his helmet.
“He’s alive.”
Nathan nearly collapsed.
“The device is safe.”
Evelyn covered her face.
Emma closed her eyes.
Rebecca exhaled.
Charles was carried out on a stretcher.
Nathan walked beside him.
Charles reached for Emma’s hand.
She hesitated.
Then took it.
“I’m sorry.”
Emma looked at him.
“For what?”
Charles’s eyes filled.
“For knowing enough to stop this twenty-three years ago.”
“And choosing comfort instead.”
Emma did not forgive him.
Not there.
Not because he was injured.
Not because the moment demanded something sentimental.
She simply said the truth.
“You’ll have to live with that.”
Charles nodded.
“Yes.”
Agents carried him away.
Emma leaned against the wall.
Then another pain tore through her abdomen.
Sharper.
Lower.
She gasped.
Rebecca immediately stood.
“Emma?”
Nathan turned.
Emma gripped the wall.
Another wave came.
Nathan rushed toward her.
“What’s happening?”
Emma looked down.
A warm liquid spread across the hospital sweatpants.
Rebecca’s face changed.
Nathan went completely pale.
May you like
Emma looked at him.
“My water just broke.”
