Chapter 7 - The True Test of Anna's Body

"You have a camera?" Evelyn’s voice dropped to a terrified whisper.

"Installed it last week when Anna started getting unexplained headaches," I said, looking Evelyn dead in the eyes. "It records in 4K, audio included, directly to cloud storage. Every word you whispered in her ear tonight is saved on a secure server."

Evelyn turned white as a sheet. She staggered back, practically collapsing onto the porch railing.

"Mark!" the lead paramedic yelled from the living room. "We need to transport her right now. Her blood pressure is 185 over 115, and her contractions are two minutes apart. The baby is in fetal distress."

The world stopped.

I pushed past the officers and ran to the stretcher as they strapped Anna in. Anna reached out through the straps, her fingers clutching my forearm with desperate strength.

"Mark... don't let anything happen to our baby girl..." she wheezed through the plastic mask.

"I’m right here, Anna. I’m coming with you," I said, running alongside the gurney as they wheeled her out the front door.

"Sir, you ride in the front of the ambulance," the paramedic ordered.

As they loaded Anna into the back, Evelyn tried to push past Officer Davis toward the ambulance doors.

"Mark! You can't leave me here with the police! I am your mother! Tell them to let me go!" she shrieked, clutching at my shirt.

I turned around, grabbed her wrist, and pulled her hand off my clothes with unmistakable force.

"If anything happens to my wife or my daughter," I leaned into her face, my voice trembling with murderous clarity, "you won't have to worry about the police. Because you will be dead to me, and I will use every single penny of my father’s trust to put you in a state penitentiary for the rest of your miserable life."

I climbed into the ambulance. The doors slammed shut. The siren wailed, and we tore down the street into the darkness, leaving Evelyn standing on the pavement in handcuffs.
