CHAPTER 1 — The House That Stopped Feeling Like Home

The next morning, the silence inside the house felt different.

Not peaceful.

Not calm.

Heavy.

The kind of silence that comes after a storm has already destroyed everything in its path.

Lena sat on the edge of the bed, staring down at her hands.

She had barely slept.

Not because of Oliver’s fever.

Not because of the exhaustion.

But because she kept replaying the same moment in her mind.

Mason standing in the kitchen.

Holding their son.

Looking at her with a pain she had never seen before.

For months, she had convinced herself that she could handle everything.

The pregnancy.

The house.

Oliver.

The endless expectations from Patricia.

She told herself it was temporary.

She told herself family was worth sacrificing for.

But last night, when Mason saw her barely standing over a burned pot while his mother and sister relaxed on the couch…

Something inside him broke.

And Lena knew something inside her had broken too.

A soft knock came from the doorway.

“Lena?”

She looked up.

Mason stood there holding a tray.

A bowl of fresh soup.

Medicine.

A glass of water.

And a small smile.

“I made breakfast.”

Lena looked surprised.

“You?”

Mason smiled slightly.

“I can cook.”

She almost laughed.

Almost.

Then her eyes filled with tears.

“I’m sorry.”

Mason immediately walked closer.

“For what?”

“For letting it get this bad.”

His expression changed.

“Lena…”

“I should have said something.”

Her voice cracked.

“I should have told you how tired I was.”

Mason sat beside her.

“You shouldn’t have needed to beg for help in your own home.”

Those words hurt because they were true.

Lena looked away.

“I didn’t want you to fight with your family because of me.”

Mason shook his head slowly.

“No.”

His voice became firm.

“They made you feel like asking for basic kindness was causing trouble.”

He reached for her hand.

“You weren’t the problem.”

Before Lena could answer, Oliver appeared at the door.

His little face was still tired, but his fever had finally started going down.

“Daddy…”

Mason immediately opened his arms.

Oliver climbed onto the bed.

“Grandma is mad.”

Mason froze.

“What did she say?”

Oliver looked confused.

“She said Mommy ruined everything.”

Lena’s face went pale.

Mason’s jaw tightened.

He already knew.

Patricia was not going to leave quietly.

Downstairs, Patricia stood in the living room with Brianna.

Their bags were packed.

But they weren’t leaving.

Not yet.

“You actually believe he will choose them over us?” Patricia said coldly.

Brianna crossed her arms.

“He’s just angry.”

Patricia smiled.

“He always comes back.”

She looked around the expensive house.

“The problem with Mason is that he thinks he built all of this himself.”

She picked up her phone.

“I’ll remind him who gave him his first opportunity.”

But she didn’t know…

May you like

Mason had already made his decision.

And this time, there would be no coming back.
