Chapter 3 — Every Lie Has a Witness

"I never said she left," Gertrude insisted.
"I only said she wasn't... suitable."
Prudence finally found her voice.
"You always trusted her over us!"
"No," I answered.
"I trusted both of you."
"That's why this hurts."
I reached into my jacket again.
This time, I removed my phone.
"I called the bank from the airport."
My mother blinked.
"I wanted to thank you for taking care of my family."
I tapped the screen.
"So I asked them for copies of every transfer."
Another tap.
"And then I checked something else."
The television mounted above the fireplace suddenly lit up.
My phone connected automatically.
The screen filled with security footage.
Not from inside the house.
From the ATM across town.
Date after date.
Month after month.
Gertrude withdrawing nearly every dollar I had sent.
Luxury boutiques.
Jewelry stores.
Designer clothing.
Spa resorts.
Casino cash advances.
Then another clip.
Prudence loading shopping bags into a luxury SUV.
Another.
A vacation in Hawaii.
Another.
Gertrude signing paperwork for a brand-new Mercedes.
Every purchase.
Every receipt.
Every timestamp.
The guests stared in disbelief.
One man quietly whispered,
"My God..."
Then came the final recording.
A small grocery store.
Sarah.
Counting loose coins.
Putting milk back onto the shelf because she couldn't afford it.
Jamie standing beside her, hugging a loaf of discounted bread.
My mother's face turned white.
"Daniel... please..."
But I wasn't looking at her anymore.
I was looking at Sarah.
She stood trembling in the doorway, tears filling her eyes.
Not because she was embarrassed.
May you like
Because, for the first time in five years...
Someone finally believed her.
