Chapter 7 - THE NIGHT I LEFT

Margaret was taken to the hospital.
Her heart was fine.
Of course it was.
The official explanation was stress-induced fainting.
By midnight, Maisie and I were at a hotel.
Not our house.
Not Margaret’s.
A hotel twenty minutes away.
I sat on the bathroom floor while Maisie slept in the bedroom.
I cried silently into a towel.
Not because I was afraid of waking her.
Because I didn’t want to hear myself.
Everything hurt.
My marriage.
My hand.
My pride.
Mostly my daughter’s little voice.
No Nana house.
I kept hearing it.
At 12:43 a.m., Evan called.
I didn’t answer.
At 12:45, he called again.
Then a text appeared.
I’m not asking where you are.
Good.
I’m at the house.
I stared at the message.
Another arrived.
Police are still here.
Then:
They found the spare key Mom gave Rosa.
Then:
I changed the locks.
I didn’t respond.
At 1:07:
Claire, I’m sorry.
I turned the phone over.
At 1:32:
I knew enough to protect Maisie and I didn’t.
That one hurt.
Because it was true.
At 2:10:
I’m going to stay somewhere else.
At 2:12:
The house is yours and Maisie’s until you decide what happens.
I finally answered.
Okay.
Three dots appeared.
Disappeared.
Returned.
Then:
Can I see her tomorrow?
I stared at Maisie through the open bathroom door.
“No,” I whispered.
But I didn’t type it.
Instead:
Not alone.
His answer came immediately.
Understood.
The next morning, Maisie woke at 6:14.
She touched her cheek.
“Owie gone?”
“Almost.”
She smiled.
Then asked for pancakes.
Toddlers are miraculous that way.
The world can collapse at midnight.
At sunrise, they still want pancakes.
We ordered room service.
She poured syrup on the table.
I almost laughed.
Then someone knocked.
I froze.
“Room service.”
We had already received it.
I picked up my phone.
The knock came again.
“Mrs. Hale?”
I didn’t answer.
“Claire?”
A woman’s voice.
I looked through the peephole.
Rosa.
Margaret’s housekeeper.
I opened the door but left the security latch attached.
“What are you doing here?”
Rosa looked exhausted.
“I need to tell you something.”
“How did you find me?”
“I didn’t.”
That made no sense.
“What?”
“Mr. Evan called me.”
My body tightened.
“He told me he thought you might be at this hotel because you stayed here once when your kitchen flooded.”
I remembered.
Two years earlier.
“Why are you here?”
Rosa looked behind her.
“Because Mrs. Margaret has more.”
“More what?”
“Files.”
My stomach sank.
“On me?”
“On everyone.”
“Why?”
Rosa shook her head.
“I don’t know.”
“Where?”
“A storage unit.”
She slipped a piece of paper through the gap.
An address.
“What’s inside?”
“I saw boxes.”
“How many?”
“Maybe thirty.”
“Thirty?”
She nodded.
“And there is something else.”
“What?”
Rosa lowered her voice.
“Mrs. Margaret knew you would leave Evan someday.”
I stared at her.
“She talked about it for years.”
“Why?”
“She said you were temporary.”
My throat tightened.
Rosa continued.
“She said Maisie wasn’t.”
“What does that mean?”
“I don’t know.”
But her face told me she did.
“Rosa.”
She looked at Maisie behind me.
Then back at me.
“Mrs. Margaret didn’t want your marriage.”
May you like
She swallowed.
“She wanted your daughter.”
