The ballroom was still silent.

“You did nothing wrong.”

I shook my head.
“I’m finally seeing it clearly.”

“You always had a problem with my son respecting me.”
She smiled cruelly.
“You wanted to replace me.”
I almost laughed.
After eight years of marriage, after raising Daniel’s child, after sacrificing everything…

She picked it up.
“Mommy…”
I looked down.

The screen was still unlocked.

"Your wife is too emotional. She needs to learn her place."

My hands started shaking.

Margaret: "The birthday dinner will be perfect. After tonight, Claire will finally leave."
Daniel: "Are you sure?"
Margaret: "Trust me. She has nowhere else to go."
I looked at Daniel.
He saw my face.

He looked afraid.
“What did you see?”
I didn’t answer.
I simply unlocked my own phone.
And called someone.

The call connected.
A calm voice answered.
“Claire? Is everything okay?”
I looked at my daughter.

“No.”
My voice was steady.
“Everything is finally becoming clear.”
Daniel stepped forward.
“Who are you calling?”
I looked him directly in the eyes.
“My lawyer.”
The ballroom erupted with whispers.
