Chapter 8 - Mae’s Gamble

The door opened from the outside.

Leah backed against the wall.

But it wasn’t Nathan.

Mae slipped inside.

“Come with me.”

“They know I’m here.”

“I know.”

Mae grabbed the bassinet.

“They’re calling security.”

“Where are we going?”

“Patient advocacy.”

They hurried through a service corridor.

Behind them, someone shouted Leah’s name.

Nathan.

“Leah!”

She kept moving.

“Leah, stop!”

Mae shoved open a stairwell door.

Leah turned.

Nathan appeared at the far end of the corridor.

Their eyes met.

For one second, neither moved.

Then Nathan started running toward her.

“Leah!”

Mae pulled Leah through the stairwell.

The door slammed shut.

They descended one floor.

Leah’s body screamed with pain.

Mae supported her around the waist.

“You can do this.”

They reached the administrative wing.

Evelyn Grant was waiting.

So were two hospital security officers.

Nathan arrived thirty seconds later.

He stopped when he saw Evelyn.

“Who are you?”

“My name is Evelyn Grant.”

She stepped between him and Leah.

“I represent your wife.”

Nathan stared at Leah.

“You hired a lawyer?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Leah looked at him.

“Four million reasons.”

Nathan went white.

Evelyn’s expression changed slightly.

That reaction was confirmation.

Doreen arrived moments later with Dr. Rusk.

“This woman is experiencing an acute psychiatric episode.”

Doreen pointed at Leah.

“She has taken a newborn into an unsecured section of the hospital.”

Mae stepped forward.

“I brought her here.”

Dr. Rusk frowned.

“Nurse Rowland, you are interfering with a medical evaluation.”

“No.”

Mae removed her badge.

“I am reporting suspected falsification of patient records.”

The corridor became silent.

Doreen’s face changed.

Mae continued.

“Someone entered false notes using my credentials.”

Dr. Rusk looked toward security.

“This is absurd.”

Evelyn raised her phone.

“Good.”

She smiled coldly.

“Then no one should object to preserving every server log, access record, security video, and electronic chart revision from the last seven days.”

May you like

Dr. Rusk stopped speaking.

That silence told Leah everything.
