Chapter 13 - THE NAME ON THE BUILDING

Two years after the anniversary, the Sterling name disappeared from corporate headquarters.
Workers removed the giant silver letters one by one.
STERLING CONSOLIDATED.
A crowd gathered below.
Willow stood beside Michael across the street.
"What are they replacing it with?"
Michael asked.
Willow smiled.
"You'll see."
A crane lifted the new letters.
DONOVAN INDUSTRIES.
Michael stared.
"No."
Willow laughed.
"What?"
"Absolutely not."
"Dad."
"You didn't ask me."
"I knew you'd say no."
"Exactly."
She slipped her arm through his.
"The board voted."
"You control the board."
"Technical detail."
Michael shook his head.
Then the final letters locked into place.
His eyes filled.
"My father would've lost his mind."
"In a good way?"
"Probably both."
Willow laughed.
The company no longer belonged entirely to the Donovan trust.
Willow had done something Richard never would have understood.
She gave part of it away.
Employees received an ownership pool.
A foundation funded vocational education.
Whistleblower protections became permanent.
Michael's garage reopened.
He refused every offer to retire.
"You own hundreds of millions in legitimate assets," Willow told him one morning.
Michael slid beneath a Honda Accord.
"And this woman needs new brake pads."
"Dad."
"Hand me the fourteen-millimeter socket."
She did.
Some things did not need changing.
Willow expanded her gallery.
Not into a luxury chain.
Into a nonprofit arts center providing studio space for young artists who could not afford Chicago rents.
She named one exhibition room after Catherine.
On opening night, Helena stood beside her.
"Look around."
Willow did.
Artists.
Mechanics.
Teachers.
Former Sterling employees.
Neighbors.
People Richard would never have invited to his ballroom.
"What?"
Helena smiled.
"This is your six hundred guests."
Willow understood.
Two years earlier, six hundred people had watched her humiliation.
Tonight, almost six hundred people had come because she had built something worth sharing.
May you like
Willow smiled.
"I like these better."
