CHAPTER 1 — The Day Jasper Lost Everything

The first thing Jasper noticed when he returned home was the silence.

Not the peaceful kind.

The kind that made a person realize something had changed.

The apartment looked exactly the same.

The expensive furniture.

The designer decorations.

The framed photos from their wedding.

Everything was still there.

Except Hailey.

Except Toby.

Except the woman he thought would always forgive him.

Jasper dropped his keys on the marble counter.

“Hailey?”

No answer.

He frowned.

He checked the bedroom.

Empty.

The nursery.

Empty.

The kitchen.

Empty.

Then he saw the envelope sitting perfectly in the center of the dining table.

His name was written on it.

Jasper Whitmore.

Something about the handwriting made his chest tighten.

He opened it slowly.

Inside was a single piece of paper.

Three sentences.

I spent two years loving the man I thought you were.

Yesterday, you showed me exactly who you are.

Do not look for me. My father already knows everything.

Jasper stared at the last sentence.

My father already knows everything.

For the first time that day...

Fear entered his mind.

Because Jasper knew something about Hailey that never made sense.

She had always been strangely calm around powerful people.

She never acted impressed by money.

She never cared about luxury.

When investors praised his company, she simply smiled.

When his family bragged about their future wealth, she never reacted.

He always thought she was just quiet.

He never imagined she was hiding an empire.

Three hours later, Jasper’s phone rang.

It was his business partner.

“Jasper... we have a problem.”

“What problem?”

“The investors are requesting an emergency meeting.”

Jasper relaxed slightly.

“About what?”

A long pause.

Then the answer came.

“About Robertson Global Corporation.”

His expression changed.

“What does Robertson Global have to do with us?”

The voice on the other end became nervous.

“Jasper... you really didn’t know?”

“Know what?”

“The reason our company received funding.”

Silence.

“The reason major investors trusted us.”

Another pause.

“It was because of Hailey Robertson.”

Jasper stopped breathing.

The name hit him like a physical blow.

Hailey Robertson.

Not Hailey Whitmore.

Robertson.

The same Robertson family whose company controlled billions in global investments.

The same family whose founder was known as one of the most powerful businessmen in the country.

Finnley Robertson.

Her father.

That evening, Jasper rushed to his parents' house.

His mother, Gillian, opened the door.

“What happened? Why do you look so stressed?”

Jasper looked at her.

“Did you know?”

“Know what?”

“That Hailey is Finnley Robertson’s daughter.”

The color disappeared from Gillian’s face.

For a moment...

Nobody spoke.

Then Priscilla, sitting on the sofa, slowly lowered her glass.

“You’re lying.”

Jasper stared at her.

“You knew?”

Priscilla looked away.

And that was the answer.

His stomach dropped.

“You knew?”

She sighed.

“I found out months ago.”

“And you never told me?”

“Because I wanted to know if you actually loved her.”

Jasper laughed bitterly.

“What?”

Priscilla looked at him coldly.

“You wanted her because you thought she was ordinary.”

“You liked feeling superior.”

“But she was never beneath you.”

“She was the one person in the room who was actually above everyone.”

At that exact moment...

Across the city...

Hailey sat inside a private hospital suite owned by her father.

Toby slept peacefully beside her.

Finnley stood near the window.

His face was calm.

But his eyes were furious.

“I should have known,” he said quietly.

Hailey looked down.

“I didn’t want you to fight my battles, Dad.”

Finnley turned around.

“You weren’t asking me to fight a battle.”

“You were asking me to protect my daughter.”

He walked closer.

“And I failed because I didn’t know you needed protection.”

Hailey looked at her baby.

“I only wanted Jasper to love me.”

Finnley’s expression softened.

“He did love something.”

Hailey looked up.

“What?”

“Your kindness.”

A pause.

“Until he realized he could take advantage of it.”

Finnley placed a folder on the table.

“Tomorrow morning, we begin.”

Hailey looked at it.

May you like

“What is that?”

“The truth.”
