Chapter 8 - Mother and Son

The company had been Susan’s idea.

That changed everything.

According to incorporation records, she created DSR Consulting eleven months before the baptism.

Daniel was added as an authorized account user two weeks later.

The first transfers from his employer occurred almost immediately.

At first, the amounts were small.

$2,000.

$3,500.

$4,200.

They were disguised as consulting expenses.

Then the amounts grew.

Susan had received more than sixty thousand dollars over ten months.

Daniel had received more.

The money had paid credit cards.

Private-investigator invoices.

Phillip Grant’s legal fees.

And Chloe’s apartment.

Daniel’s affair and Susan’s custody plan were not separate disasters.

They were being financed through the same scheme.

When Robert learned the truth, he moved out of the house.

He called me that evening.

“I spent thirty-seven years believing I knew my wife.”

I knew exactly how he felt.

He apologized again.

This time I accepted the apology.

Not because he had done nothing wrong.

He had known Daniel was seeing Chloe and remained silent.

But there was a difference between cowardice and conspiracy.

I had learned to recognize it.

Three days later the court DNA results arrived.

Mara called me before sending the report.

“Sit down.”

My heart pounded.

“Just tell me.”

“Daniel is Lily’s biological father.”

I closed my eyes.

I had known.

There had never been another man.

Still, hearing it confirmed loosened something inside my chest.

Daniel’s final attempt to question my fidelity was dead.

“What about Noah?”

“The preliminary result came too.”

I waited.

“Daniel is also Noah’s biological father.”

For several seconds I said nothing.

Two children.

Born less than two months apart.

One wife.

One mistress.

One man promising both women different versions of the future.

Chloe cried when Mara told her.

Not because she had hoped Daniel was not the father.

Because certainty meant Noah would always be tied to him.

The next custody hearing was brutal for Daniel.

Mara presented the independent DNA result.

Then she presented proof that the earlier report was fraudulent.

Victor tried to distance himself from it.

The judge was unimpressed.

Daniel was ordered to surrender his passport.

His supervised visitation remained in place.

Then Mara introduced the financial evidence.

Susan’s company.

The stolen employer funds.

The forged home-equity loan.

The investigator.

The secret attorney file.

For the first time, Daniel’s composure cracked.

He leaned toward Victor.

They whispered urgently.

Susan sat two rows behind them.

She looked straight at me.

I could almost see her calculating.

Then something unexpected happened.

Victor stood.

“Your Honor, my client would like a brief recess to address a potential conflict of interest involving another party.”

The judge frowned.

“What party?”

Victor hesitated.

“Mrs. Susan Reed.”

Susan’s face changed.

Daniel had made his choice.

He was going to sacrifice his mother.

Outside the courtroom, Susan grabbed his arm.

“What did you tell him?”

Daniel pulled away.

“You started DSR.”

“For you.”

“You moved the first money.”

“Because you asked me to.”

“That isn’t what the records say.”

Susan stared at him.

“You ungrateful little coward.”

People in the hallway turned.

Daniel lowered his voice.

“You said you would handle this.”

“I have handled everything for you since you were twenty years old.”

“That doesn’t make this my fault.”

Susan laughed.

It was a terrible sound.

“No.”

She looked toward me.

“Your wife finally saying no made this your fault.”

Then Susan did something none of us expected.

She walked directly to Mara.

“I want my own attorney.”

Mara nodded.

“You should have one.”

Susan’s gaze returned to Daniel.

“And then I want to make a statement.”

Daniel went pale.

“Mom.”

Susan ignored him.

“To the company.”

Robert stepped closer.

“Susan, what are you doing?”

She looked at her husband.

“What your son just did to me.”

Daniel’s face tightened.

Susan smiled without warmth.

“I’m surviving.”

That night, federal investigators contacted Daniel’s employer.

By morning, the company had referred the missing funds to law enforcement.

Daniel had spent months preparing to prove that I was unstable.

Instead, his mother had just agreed to prove that he was a thief.
