CHAPTER 2: The Secret Behind the Fake Heiress

Paige Whitmore was found three days later.

Not hiding.

Not running.

Waiting.

She sat inside a small roadside motel outside Providence when Evelyn walked into the room.

No police.

No lawyers.

Just Evelyn.

And Paige.

For several seconds, neither woman spoke.

Finally, Paige looked down.

“I knew you would come.”

Evelyn crossed her arms.

“You knew I survived.”

Paige swallowed.

“Yes.”

“Then why didn’t you tell Nathan?”

Paige looked away.

“Because I wanted him to think he won.”

The answer surprised Evelyn.

“You hate me.”

Paige laughed softly.

Not happily.

Painfully.

“I did.”

She reached into her suitcase.

And removed a folder.

Inside were documents.

Old documents.

Very old.

Evelyn opened the first page.

Her expression changed.

The company name was written across the top.

Whitmore Maritime Holdings.

Nathan’s family company.

The company everyone believed had collapsed twenty years ago.

“What is this?” Evelyn asked.

Paige looked at her.

“My father didn’t lose the company.”

“He was forced out.”

Evelyn frowned.

“By who?”

Paige’s eyes filled with shame.

“My mother.”

“Miriam.”

The room became silent.

Paige continued.

“She destroyed her own husband to gain control.”

“She forged documents.”

“She transferred assets.”

“She ruined his reputation.”

Evelyn slowly looked through the papers.

Then she saw a name.

Her own company.

Hart Maritime Cold Chain.

Her eyes narrowed.

“No…”

Paige nodded.

“Yes.”

“The first investors who helped you start your company…”

“They weren’t strangers.”

“They were connected to my father.”

Evelyn stared at her.

“What are you saying?”

Paige took a breath.

“I’m saying Nathan didn’t marry you because he loved you.”

“He married you because he knew who you were.”

The room went cold.

Colder than Unit 7.

Evelyn remembered.

Ten years earlier.

A young businessman named Nathan Whitmore.

A charming smile.

A perfect gentleman.

A man who appeared exactly when she was struggling.

She thought she found love.

But maybe…

She found a plan.

“He knew my company would grow.”

Paige nodded.

“And when you became successful, he planned to take everything.”

Evelyn closed the folder.

For years, she believed she was betrayed by a greedy husband.

Now she realized something worse.

She had been targeted from the beginning.

That evening, Evelyn returned to Hart Maritime headquarters.

She walked into her office.

The place where she had spent thousands of nights.

The place where she built her dream.

On her desk was a single envelope.

No name.

No address.

Only one sentence written on the front.

You still don't know who started this.

Inside was a photograph.

A man standing beside Nathan.

A man Evelyn recognized instantly.

Because he had been dead for fifteen years.

Her father.

But beneath the photograph was another name.

Adrian Whitmore.

Nathan’s grandfather.

The founder of the Whitmore empire.

And underneath that…

A message.

Ask your father why he protected Nathan's family.

Evelyn stared at the paper.

Her entire past shifted.

Someone else had been controlling the game.

May you like

Someone far more powerful.

And they were still watching.
